Big date in the company? Market is growing in Italy but only 13% of … – Il Sole 24 Ore

The market for Big Data Analytics in Italy, is also growing in 2014 (+ 25%) but only 13% of companies have taken or used a Data Scientist. These are the findings from the research of 2014 ‘ Observatory Big Data Analytics & amp; Business Intelligence (osservatori.net), sponsored by the School of Management of Politecnico di Milano. The growth, analysts emphasize the Polytechnic, however, seems supported, rather than by a mature use of these tools, the availability of low-cost storage technologies, the increasing amount of data generated by the web and the spread of an increasing number of mobile devices that let you use the app, make payments and interact with intelligent devices. As if to say, despite the great media success and growing awareness are still few companies facing. The deployment of these systems in organizations is so stable. Also because they lack skills and governance models ( as said only 17% of companies has adopted a Chief Data Officer , and only 13% of a Data Scientist) .

Still, the coveted Big Data Analytics is the main investment priorities for 2015, indicated 56% of chief information. The ICT Budget 2014 dedicated to these solutions is growing by + 23% compared to 2013. I am therefore still large, the report states, “the potential to be seized especially in the use of unstructured data, when you consider that in “84% of cases are using internal company data and only 16% external sources such as web and social media.

As for the use of the data shows a cultural lag in the use of information . The reason for not using all the data available to the organizzazion are therefore related mainly to aspects of governance among the major obstacles the lack of specialized organizational figures, the absence of a cross-functional team of governance and lack of a garrison to ‘ entire life cycle of data management. Does not seem a problem of technological nature (only 17% of companies complain about a lack of analytics tools adequate, while 10% lack of technological skills) or data quality (14%).

It must be said, however, that in the face of an increasing amount of data available to organizations, the total volume of data used by systems of Big Data Analytics and Business Intelligence continues to grow at a rate of 22% over last year. However, the report said, organizations Italian recur in most cases data “traditional”: 83% of it is structured, that is organized according to predefined database schemas and easily manipulated, and 84% from data internal organization (generated by business processes, such as systems management), while only 16% comes from external sources or processes as web and social media.

To be more precise: the primary sources of structured data is typically represented by the transactional systems, high-performance management of information organized in patterns of default databases; the data are easily manipulated because stored in a structured way. The data semi-structured / unstructured are no schema information information that can not be adapted to a relational database (images, video content, text files), or for which there is an irregular structure or partial (XML), but not sufficient to allow the storage and management by the relational DBMS. The internal data include data generated by business processes (such as systems management, email, …) and External Data from sources external to the organization or processes (eg : from the web or social media)

The volume of semi-structured data and unstructured used is still up compared to 2013 (+ 31%) at a higher speed than those structured (+ 21%). Therefore, conclude analysts of Politecnico di Milano “opportunities to be seized so they are very high, even if you think that less than 50% of the available data in enterprise systems are actually used in applications Big Data Analytics.”
