Take care when connecting headphones to the computer: a hacker could use them to spy on you, even if you have removed or disabled the internal microphone of your devices. It has been revealed in a search of the israeli University Ben Gurion of the Negev, has developed a malware ad hoc named “Speake(a)r”. Researchers have shown that, up to a distance of six meters, the result you get is very good, but they went beyond that. “Speake(a)r” exploits a little-known feature of the codec of RealTek (taiwanese company leader in the sector sound on many motherboards), that allows you to re-configure the output channel (listening) of the computer in an input channel (microphone). The malware can record audio even in the case in which the headphones are connected to an attack that involves only the output, even if the computer is not equipped with a microphone jack. The hacker will then be able to compress the recording, and send it to a remote.
