The 20 years of Hotmail, from e-mail for free on the web to Outlook – The Republic

‘WAS an early pioneer platforms of e-mail for free on the web and today, become Outlook.com, it is 20 years old. The e-mail service Hotmail, developed in ’95 by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith in Mountain View, California, is launched July 4, 1996, and soon became one of the most popular around the world. Initially guaranteed a free space of up to 2 Megabytes: a limit that today would be occupied by a single message with a media definition picture attached.

At the end of 1997 Hotmail already reaches nearly 9 million subscribers and Microsoft buys for about 400 million dollars, launching it as MSN Hotmail and later as Windows Live Hotmail. Watershed moment for the platform is 2012: the year in which Hotmail webmail from the undisputed queen is exceeded dall’emergente Google’s Gmail and it is also the year of his “transformation” in Outlook.com, commissioned by Microsoft in its race to gain market share lost over the years to the benefit of Google.

Today from Outlook.com passes access to the Microsoft family systems and the mail service is integrated into Windows 10 and other services communication such as Skype. Has over 400 million active users worldwide (according to official figures that date back to 2013).
