Homemade Robot is called R1 and was invented in Italy: will be the butler – Contattolab

One day robots will replace humans and control the world. Behold, this was the disturbing fiction in this film of the 90s, to be honest, a little scared when we crossed watched them. After 30 years, we can breathe a sigh of relief, at least as far as the control of the world. Despite some infamous decision too, the planet earth is still firmly in the hands of humans. However there is no doubt as robotics over the years has had an unprecedented evolution, virtually the world today is based on it. From kitchen appliances, cars, industrial machinery, now everything is automated, and objectively we are facilitating life. But the most important step that any researcher would like to accomplish in your career is to create the perfect humanoid robot, in other words able to be useful in everyday life everyday, maybe helping a senior to get up from the couch, lulled him to sleep for a newborn , perform some very dangerous job. the real dream? Inventing the butler of the future robots.

Born R1 – “ Your Personal Humanoid” – the new humanoid robot in the ecosystem of the ‘Italian Institute of Technology. Italian design, from one meter and 25 cm extendable by another 20 cm, weight 50 kg, 50% plastic and 50% carbon fiber and metal. Established with the aim of operating in domestic and professional environments. Thanks to investors who believed in the project over the next 12-18 months, R1 , will be put into production and commercialization on a large scale.

R1 – “your Personal humanoid” has been made, starting from the experience gained by IIT of iCub, the robots humanoid for the most widely used research to the world. R1 is also humanoid and has elements of uniqueness:

  • is designed by studying human responses during interaction with him. It is a work in collaboration with designers, creative and neuroscientists to understand what aspects of shape and movement of the robot make it seem longer; “human”
  • its Artificial Intelligence (AI) is designed and developed directly sull’umanoide. Most AI studies are conducted regardless of the existence of a robotic body, while on the contrary, the latest studies on neuroscience say that intelligence is developed in a functional manner to the body that houses it;
  • has a new conception of the body, in which are currently used for the 50% of the plastics structure. Future versions will incorporate smart materials, such as graphene-based, or biodegradable, more sophisticated sensors, more efficient batteries and circuits embedded in the very structure of the robot.

R1 it has been achieved in just 16 months with the help of a team of 22 scientists and technicians led by IIT Giorgio Metta some of the Genoese industrial designers, and a group of industrial & amp; graphic designers, illustrators, and entertainment experts coming from two different creative realities: one in Milan who coordinated the development of the creative concept, the identification of interaction scenarios and coordinated market by Andrea Pagnin and Luigi Focanti to 14.6 Creative Licensing, and the ‘other Barcelona coordinated by Pierpaolo Congiu Drop Innovation , who has collaborated with the Milanese reality for the realization of the design of humanoid surfaces.

height R1 is variable, its body extends from 125 to 140cm thanks to an extendable bust. Similarly, his arms can be extended to 13cm forward, to reach distant objects. The torso, as well as move up and down, can also twist sideways. The movement in battery is guaranteed by a battery for about 3 hours; when downloading, simply plug into your home electrical outlet using a power supply, just like any household appliance. R1 is able to move in the environments thanks to wheels with which reaches a speed of 2 km / h, the value that designers have determined as a safety limit.

face is made up of a full-color LED screen, whose stylized faces give the robot expressions useful to non-verbal communication with the man. Patented by IIT, the screen is designed to be low cost, and houses the sensors for vision: 2 and 1 stereo 3D scanners cameras; those for the balance: 1 1 accelerometer and gyroscope; and those for the generation and perception of sound: speaker 1 and microphone. In the belly accommodated, in addition, the computer 3 which govern the ability of the robot, from the calculation to the movement of the head and control of the sensors. A wireless card allows the robot to connect to the Internet, obtaining useful information to its interaction with the man or upgrades of its software. The software, in fact, parts of Open Source in order to benefit from the cooperation of the community which already operates around the humanoid robotics IIT.

Initially, the cost will be prohibitive, as a small car and just thought for large structures, such as a senior center may be, in the future the most accessible SRA cost and open to a consumer market.
