Multi, lift of the future for horizontal movement – PianetaCellulare.it

It’s called Multi the first lift in the world able to move horizontally, being able to transport people and objects quickly from place to place. Something that until now we could only see in futuristic movies like Blade Runner and Metropolis , where people can not only be transported vertically via a lift, but also horizontally.

Multi was presented by ThyssenKrupp, the first company worldwide to implement a project of this type, at the headquarters of the Innovation Centre in Gijon, Spain, and works through the magnetic levitation , the method by which an object is suspended on another object without a support in addition to magnetic fields. The electromagnetic force is used to counter the effects of the gravitational force, one of the four known fundamental interactions in physics.

Multi is an innovative system consisting of more cabins, can move inside a single elevator shaft, which is able to move also horizontally thanks to a magnetic levitation linear motor and without the use of cables, thus increasing the transport capacity of up to 50% more.

Multi time is a prototype , realized in scale 1: 3, and consists of two wells from 10 meters and 4 cabins. It ‘program in the testing by 2016 in the German steel company skyscraper, built in the town of Rottweil, Germany. If all goes well, it will be the beginning of the spread of a new type of vehicle for trips that could change the way of designing buildings and cities, because it could not only be used to move people or objects within a building, but also from place to place in a city.

“The cities are growing and Multi will be our response to the challenges of the future” said the CEO ThyssenKrupp Elevator, Andreas Schierenbeck. “The building systems evolve and it is necessary to adapt the mode of travel in the elevator, to best meet the needs of the buildings with large numbers of people. And there are no height limits.”

Today in urban areas live more than half the world’s population, and it is expected that by 2050 more than two thirds of the world population will live in urban areas. To manage this sea change, “the cities are already changing shape, going increasingly upwards” said Dario Trabucco, a researcher at the University Iuav of Venice and expert in tall buildings.

The advantage of these new systems is to give architects the opportunity to design more complex buildings, in which the vertical and horizontal mobility becomes an integral part of the design and the architectural and urban design of the building, according to Trabucco.

One day, in a few years, it will be possible to build large real estate complexes, with tall buildings and integrated. What do you think? Write us in the comment box below.
