– In 23 years, greenhouse gas emissions in Italy registered a decrease of 16%. It is a “saving” of 84 million tonnes of CO2 equivalent, rising from 521 million tonnes in 1990 to 437 million in 2013. An amount of greenhouse gases produced by a drive of about 500 billion kilometers. This was announced by the Ispra, whose preliminary data for 2014 shows only an annual decline of more 20 million tons, for a total of 417 million.
The national inventory of emissions of greenhouse gases prepared by ISPRA highlights the significant reduction of emissions of dioxide carbon, 82% of the total pollutants released. The “leaks” of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O), are equal to about 10.1% and 4.4% of the total and down 18.3% and 29.6%.
Less industry, more renewable – The general reduction in emissions, particularly since 2008, due both to the fall in energy consumption and industrial production (due to the economic crisis and the relocation of some production sectors) and increased production of energy from renewable sources and increase energy efficiency.
The main enemies: energy and transport – Half of the gas emissions that alter the climate come from the sectors of energy production and transport. In the latter, compared to 1990, emissions increased by 0.2% due to increased mobility of goods and passengers, highlights the Ispra. In the same period, however, emissions from energy industries declined by 21.9% , thanks to the increased use of natural gas and renewable sources.
Improved General – Down also emissions in the sector of industrial processes (-24.1%), due to the reduction of emissions of nitrous oxide in the chemical industry. In the 23 years examined, also, emissions from sectors of Agriculture and Livestock were down 14.9% due to the lower number of animals, especially cattle and dairy cows, both for less use of nitrogen fertilizers. Management and waste , finally, emissions fell by 20.5% and are likely to decline in the coming years thanks to the collection .
