This year the Feast of the tree Legambiente dedicated to the fight against climate change. To combat global warming tree is the most powerful ally we have. In view of the Global Climate March the tree becomes a symbol and witness of change, towards a model of management and sustainable development.
The measures planned for next weekend throughout Italy are aimed at the protection of green spaces urban and forest; all within the national program planned by the Coalition for Climate. The latter was created to raise awareness about the outcome of the Climate Conference in Paris which will meet in December in the United Nations summit (Cop 21) and will define the new international climate agreement, “the last real opportunities to save us, “as the Pope says in his encyclical Praised yes (more information on www.coalizioneclima.it).
The cassanese edition of Tree Day consists of two events: a meeting-debate dedicated to the issue of veteran trees and the traditional planting.
“When the trees become monument” is the title of the debate to be held Saturday, November 21 at 17.30 at the City Library Miani Perotti. Speakers include:
• Dr. Milan Rosabella, regional representative for the census of monumental trees, who will speak of the Law no. 10 of 2013 and its application in Puglia
• Dr. Francesco Matarrese, president of the Regional Technical Commission for the protection and enhancement of the monumental olive trees, who will talk about “AppOLEA” (an app for self-Census monumental olive trees)
• Dr. Vito Giampetruzzi agronomist who will talk about agriculture and protection of the landscape: from agricultural production to the Monumental Trees
The subject is close to our hearts, because we joined a year initiative last national census. In the field of awareness-raising campaigns for the respect of the trees we feel particularly involved and we try to do our utmost (Census Monumental Trees, Tree Day, We plant against the hydrogeological, Competition Embrace the Tree). This vocation is born from the territorial context that surrounds us: the presence of the forest Mercadante and numerous groves to be protected and the presence of trees and rows isolated even more at risk have led us to make a contribution for the census. Our volunteers have collected the data from December 2014. On July 17 last year we delivered all the reporting forms to the City of Cassano Murge, which then initiated the procedure. We tell our experience and present the “map of the reports” with placement of all the specimens surveyed (51 well). It will be an opportunity to shed light also on the case of the carob Via Mellitto, on which opened in recent weeks a media event.
According appointment Sunday, November 22 at 10:00 am at the municipal flowerbed located in Via Martyrs of the Republic where he will start the recovery operation of the green space, currently in a state of decay. A morning dedicated to children, but open to everyone, during which we will house some saplings provided ARIF. Legambiente will be responsible for planting with the children of the Group Scout AGESCI. Simultaneously in Piazza Aldo Moro the Environment Department as part of the traditional festival “Bread and Oil in the mill” organizes the distribution of certificates of “property of the tree” to children born in the year 2014, with the blessing of the families by the parish priest and the animation group “Tribe Wish” that will help make the atmosphere fun and playful. The families with the certificate can go to Via Martyrs of the Republic for the withdrawal of the tree.
In anticipation of big global event to be held on November 29 (Global Climate March), also the Feast of ‘ Tree is “marching to the climate”. The hashtag # tree4climate will be the common thread of those who participate in the mobilization and, like last year, will send their shots to support all the work that Legambiente is carrying out alongside the Italian Coalition for Climate. We need your help to spread a culture of respect and gratitude to these tireless green lungs of the planet: the meaning told with a picture of trees in your lives.
