Star like the Sun devoured by a black hole – The Messenger

The phenomenon was already known, but this time, the destruction of a star “devoured” by a black hole, was also observed. E ‘that happened a few days ago a group of researchers led by ‘astrophysicist Sjoert van Velzen of the Johns Hopkins University, has registered with the tools, the time when a small star, roughly the size of our Sun, is literally devoured by a black hole.

The “monster” in question is at the center of a galaxy located 300 million light-years away. The event has then given rise to the formation of a jet of matter that has been moved to near the speed of light.

The results have already been reported in the journal Science.

“Our observations allowed us to follow the trajectory of the star as he has moved out of its orbit and then was captured by the gravity of the supermassive black hole,” explained their van Velzen, adding that “These events are extremely rare.”

“It ‘s the first time that we see the main steps that we could monitor the course of several months, that is, the destruction of the star formation of the relativistic jet.”
