Twitter is intensifying its battle against abuse and harassment among users by introducing new rules that forbid the publication of nudity or sexual acts published without the permission of the subject.
Twitter said Wednesday that it will block the accounts of users and hide the reported content that violate the new policies. Users who publish such content will have the suspension of their account, the social network said in a question of the FAQ.
The changes, which Twitter said that took effect Wednesday, come at a time where the social network is struggling with the management of more and more acts of cyber-bullying that says users away.
One of the changes will appear in the section on ‘Policy on abusive behavior’:
Users can not perform direct and specific threats of violence against others, including threats against a person or group based on race, ethnicity, national origin, religion, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, age or disabilities. In addition, users can not post photos or video with scenes of intimacy produced or distributed without the consent of the subject. Harassment and abuse targeted also represent a violation of the Twitter Rules and Terms of Service.
The fight against harassment and bullying behavior has become increasingly important for Twitter. In a series of memos sent to employees in February, the company’s CEO Dick Costolo has taken personal responsibility for what he called “an inadequate response to chronic abuse and harassment that occurs every day on the social network” and promised to take “stronger measures to eliminate the activity of the microblogging platform.”
The death of actor Robin Williams in August led to some Twitter users to send messages to the vicious daughter pushing the daughter of deceased to delete the application from your mobile phone. In the same month, Anita Sarkeesian, an academic at the way women are portrayed in video games, was so disturbed by the tweet that received that ran away from home for fear of his safety.
Until recently long ago, Twitter had few ways to check messages of abuse that members send to each other. In an effort to reduce this behavior, the social network has presented a new set of tools in December to help its members to fight harassment and report to the administrators of the site more easily abusive behavior.
The users are allowed to post content, including potentially provocative, provided they do not violate the Twitter Rules and Terms of Service. Twitter does not examine the content and does not remove potentially offensive content unless such contents are not violating the Twitter Rules and Terms of Service.
In the case of reporting abuse, Twitter will verify if the post actually violate its policy and if so the tweet in question will be hidden and the publisher will freeze the account. There is a team of employees dedicated to these operations, the “Trust and Security team”, online monitoring requests 24 hours a day.
