While previously it was only speculated that Microsoft would have decided to abandon the brand ‘Internet Explorer’, the software maker has now confirmed that it will use a new name for the next successor to the its browser, with Spartan as a code name of the project.
Speaking at Microsoft Convergence Monday, the head of marketing at Microsoft Chris Capossela has revealed that the company is currently working on a new name and logo for its next browser. “We are looking for the new brand, or a new name, for our browser that should be there in Windows 10,” said Capossela. “We will continue to have Internet Explorer, but we will also have a new browser called Project Spartan, which is code-named Project Spartan. We have to give a name to the thing.”
Internet Explorer will still exist initially in Windows 10 , especially for the backward compatibility of the programs, but the new Project Spartan will be integrated into the new operating system and in a few years will replace the entire Internet Explorer, becoming the main browser for users of Windows 10 to access to the web (unless they install an alternative one). Microsoft has tried unsuccessfully to shake off the negative image of Internet Explorer in recent years, including through advertising campaigns. The advertisements did not improve the situation, and the former head of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has left the company in December, marking a new era for the web browser.
Capossela has also detailed the power to use the brand of Microsoft on Windows or Internet Explorer, and showed some results in research, conducted in order to find the right new name for the browser of the company that will replace Internet Explorer. Anticipate the brand ‘Microsoft’ to the name of the new browser has increased the interest of some people using Chrome in the UK, according to research. “Only by putting the name of Microsoft in front of it, the rate of Chrome users on appeal is incredibly high,” said Capossela.
Microsoft is testing carefully names through various market research in various markets, and it is not clear yet when the company plans to unveil the final name for the successor of its Internet Explorer. However, it seems clear that the company intends to adopt a name that will be far from ‘Internet Explorer’ and it is likely that the new name will be very close to ‘Project Spartan’.
Speaking at Microsoft Convergence, the Microsoft executive also discussed the ways in which the company intends to make money in the future, focusing in particular on social media.
The new browser should come with the support for voice commands as “add to favorites”, “make this page my homepage”, and “go on Facebook.com.” The vocal support could be enabled through Cortana, the virtual assistant that Microsoft should debut in Windows 10. Spartan will have a design very different from that of Internet Explorer. In particular Spartan will: a button / star to save a page to Favorites, a button to enable the ‘reading mode’ to extract text from any page to make it more readable (similar to Safari Reader mode), an icon Sharing that lets you easily send a link to open website through social networks or e-mail, and the icon ‘three-point’ that is used to access the settings, as in Chrome and Firefox.
Spartan debut with Windows 10, but developers using the Preview of Windows 10 are already testing for Microsoft in order to improve it.
