 iss international space station

Rome, March 29, 2015 – E ‘arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) the Soyuz capsule, took off at 22:42 Moscow time (the 20:42 Italian), from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan carrying NASA astronaut Scott Kelly retired (51 years) and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko (54 years) and Gennady Padalka (56 years). To welcome the ISS also Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti.

This is the first mission organized by NASA which provides for the permanence of the three astronauts on the ISS for over a year, important experiment for missions in project Mars.

But the real peculiarity of this mission is the fact that for the first time the twins are separated by the atmosphere: the twin of Scott Kelly, Mark Kelly, remains on Earth continuously monitored and the data will be compared with those from the brother in Space.

For the first time you will be able to give an empirical demonstration of the “twin paradox” according to the theory of relativity by Albert Einstein applied on humans and will prove, at the end of the mission, although they are born at the same time, the two will have a different age of three milliseconds.

The theory of relativity has already been repeatedly demonstrated by flying an atomic clock with a jet around the Earth and compared with a similar one was at the airport, but it is the first time that the experiment is done directly using the twins.

Main supporter of the issue of the twin paradox was already Herbert Dingle, English philosopher, who sought to prove the invalidity of the theory of Einstein. Despite receiving numerous refutations logic by Einstein and Born, he continued to write to the newspapers, and when they began to reject publications, spoke of a conspiracy against him. By solving the twin paradox, Einstein admitted the theoretical possibility of a journey into the future, notwithstanding the inability to exceed the speed of light. The first theoretical construction for which it was possible to travel in the past, was elaborated later by Einstein himself with Nathan Rosen.
