Snow is always less snow: 2 billion people at risk of water – greenMe.it

snow water

Snow snowy reduced in the mountains means Reduced water in plain . From the US to the East, in the next century much of the planet could have even more difficulty in accessing water. The result, needless to say, is the global warming. Rising global temperatures could “turn off the taps” by over 2 billion people.

The warning was a new study, conducted by scientists from the Columbia University. The gradual melting of winter snow gives water that feeds not only the natural ecosystems but also cities and factories.

This resource may soon be in jeopardy. In the new study, scientists have identified the drainage basins that depend on snow across the northern hemisphere. They currently serve 2 billion people in America, Europe, Middle East and Central Asia.

All of these areas are rich in terrain agricultural, in trouble today is because of increasing drought because the devastation associated with wars.

The snow is an important water source seasonal especially around the great chain mountain. From the higher elevations, thaw guarantees the presence of water in the plains during the spring and summer, at peak demand of man.

But heating Global is upsetting this Balance .The winter precipitation are falling, the snow falls at altitudes progressively higher and the merger occurs first.

The scientists observed the drop accumulations of snow in many regions, a trend that will continue. The permanent snow fields are disappearing in the Colorado Rockies and the Himalayas as well as in other areas. This year the snow cover of California has reached the lowest level recorded for the last 500 years.

“The snow is important because it is its own tank. But the consequences of reduced snow cover are not the same for all places” , said The author Justin Mankin.

Mankin and his co-authors also calculated the Possible effects future based on how many people consume water generated by melting snow. They examined 421 river basins that cross the northern hemisphere, combining data from several climate models with those demographics on water use. They found that 97 basins that today serve about 2 billion people and that depend on melting snow.

Who will live in the next century will have to deal with this.
