White Night is a kind of synthesis of classic survival horror genre, Resident Evil Silent Hill. The difference is that the focus of this title is not the action is even psychology, but the narrative. Do not expect to fight monsters or something. White Night in the concept is very simple, and perhaps for this scary: you are alone (so to speak) in a typical haunted house, complete with a strange esoteric symbols, disturbing portraits on the walls, crosses, the cemetery in the garden and so on. In short, a good dose of cliché but do not ruin the atmosphere. You’ll have to explore the various environments, solve puzzles. But what matters most is that you are in the dark. A dark, which can be penetrated only with help, often very weak, the matches that we must try to dose not to remain in the dark. But a darkness that is ready to devour everything, and that seems to always have the best. Who remembers a game like Alan Wake, already know this feeling.
White Night is a sophisticated game. You can tell by the many literary quotations and theatrical contained in the various documents scattered throughout the house, they have a key role in rebuilding the dramatic events that lie in that dark place. Even the historical context is remarkable. But the element really is undoubtedly the most stylish soundtrack. In a world as dark as that of White Night music has a crucial role. Each share is accompanied or underlined by the sound unmistakably jazz that brings us back to the magic of the typical American clubs of the ’30s.
However, this is a difficult game, and still shots, though disturbing, enough influence on the gameplay, making it less immediate. The action is very limited: it takes a good deal of patience, because the game is very slow, and everything is based on finding out slowly a story. For this reason, if you are not in the mood, White Night ends up boring. In short, is a video game more conceptual than anything else. An exercise in style definitely commendable part of a small development house, justly rewarded by the support of a giant like Activision.
Light against darkness, evil against good. It’s all here, in this very strong dichotomy, the essence of White Night. But maybe that’s looking at everything in black and white that you fail to grasp the many nuances that were previously unaware.
