Robotics, ok EU for robot butlers in aid of the elderly – diregiovani

PRESS RELEASE – To research and develop a new type of robot capable of providing home care discreet, safe and proactive for elderly people suffering from what is called ” mild cognitive impairment, “so as to improve the quality of life and increase the level of autonomy is the goal of the new research project” Ramcip “(short for” Robotic Assistant for MCI Patients at home) three-year just started and funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program with EUR 4 million.

Of these have been awarded more than 330 thousand Italy, represented by Sant’Anna School . Innovative robotic system for service personnel working scientists from across Europe, with the strong involvement of Italy, represented by Anne and, in particular, by its Institute TeCIP, acronym for Communication Technologies, Information, Perception. The coordination of “ Ramcip ” is entrusted to the Institute for Information Technology Research Center and Technology greek; the project consortium participating groups of the Technische Universität München (Gemany), the Foundation for Research and Technology of Greece, Medical University of Lublin (Poland), Ace Foundation (Spain), as well as two small-medium enterprises and Polish English and, of course, the same SSSA.

Service robots for intelligent environments of new generation will have to provide secure and discreet, can have a positive effect in the significant aspects of daily life, ranging from the preparation of food to the management of the house. At the same time, the new generation of home robots will help you maintain a positive attitude and keep in cognitive and physical exercise. The project “Ramcip” provides, in particular, that this capacity is an integral part of the daily behavior of new robotic systems. One of the challenges lies in the ability to induce the user to perform this exercise – beneficial for the maintenance of their own psychic abilities and physical – in a veiled way, preventing the person feel obligated.

Universities and research partners will develop a new type of service robots moving toward some basic directions, such as the ability to provide the system functions cognitive, based on the advanced monitoring of the person and the home environment, allowing the robot to the decision on when and how to assist by acting independently and in cooperation with the person who lends help. For communication between man and robot will be taken interfaces enabling a empathic communication – which is not limited to just “press a button” – and do display the commands according to the techniques of augmented reality, so in a way more engaging. For the first time, is applied in service robotics, to provide care in the home environment, “the ability of advanced manipulation”, skilled and safe, to ensure grip and manipulation of numerous domestic objects, in addition to physical man- physical robot, with assistance activities that involve physical contact. Researchers will pay particular attention to safety.

“Aging is associated with declining physical and cognitive – explain the researcher Emanuele Ruffaldi of Sant’Anna School, and the coordinator of the project, the scientist greek Dimitrios Tzovaras – as it distorts the way a person moves in the home, manipulates objects and perceives the home environment. These aspects have a negative effect on the ability of older people to provide for themselves, independently, to domestic activities of daily living. The effects are made worse by ‘mild cognitive impairment’, which can evolve into dementia. The ‘robotic assistive’ can play a vital role in the overall improvement of the quality of life of older people – end – helping them to live longer and independently. “

The project” Ramcip “takes its first steps, and” challenges are significant – said Sandra Hirche’s Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Technical (University of Munich) – to assist the elderly in their many domestic activities in a discreet and transparent – robots that will be created by the project will act as effective Supporters of the mental health of the patient and become a solution that changes with the user. In doing so the solutions coincide with its needs, as these evolve over time. “

iCub is an android robot built by the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa. 104 cm tall and weighing 22 kg, its aesthetics and functionality reminiscent of a child of about four years. The humanoid robot of the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT) in Genoa, iCub, is learning to stand and maintain balance even during physical with people. Thanks to the artificial skin that allows it to have 4,000 hotspots all over the body, iCub is able to measure at any instant contacts and forces it receives from outside, responding with appropriate movements to maintain balance. These new capabilities will be useful when, in the near future, iCub cohabit with man in home environments and will have to move safely for themselves and for others. In fact, it will not fall if bumped and will be able to interact with men even through the body and the tatto.Quest’ultimo result was achieved thanks to the efforts of researchers from IIT and, in particular, the European Project Codyco, coordinated by Francesco Nori , the Department of Robotics, Brain and Cognitive Sciences at IIT.
