Lithium batteries more durable thanks to silk – News 24 Games

Lithium batteries are certainly very useful and used, but they have a feature that greatly limits: a short life that forces the user to recharge them so frequently, and with each refill it reduces gradually the energy capacity.

A team of scientists at the Beijing Institute of Technology, she found a derivative of silk fibroin regenerated, is able to store five times more energy than the graphite, the material that is all ‘ now used for the anode of lithium batteries: thanks to the silk then, however, the ecological material, you can create a new generation of lithium-ion batteries, the most efficient and powerful.

The Chinese team found that natural silk can be processed to create layers from infinitesimal dimensions, called nano hierarchical porous sheets (NS), to be incorporated in the prototypes of lithium batteries and supercapacitors.

This material is the best compromise available today, with good performance and cost is not too high, although still not the material with the greatest potential for energy storage.

This new derivative of silk allows losing only 9% of the its energy capacity after 10,000 cycles of charge.
