Apple Pencil or consistency at the time of the iPad Pro

With the introduction of the stylus to use with the tablet, for many fans of Apple, Tim Cook would betray the principles of Steve Jobs. But it is said that the founder of today would not have approved the choice

Consistency is a virtue difficult to define. You can be true to themselves and betray their own choices, but also the opposite: in order to be faithful to their ideas, you may end up forgetting their true nature. This is what they wanted to Apple fans, at least those who criticize Tim Cook that he presented yesterday the Apple Pencil. Several times, in fact, Steve Jobs had emphasized that one of the advantages of the iPhone was just do not need a stylus. “The finger pointer is the best possible,” he said, and on another occasion he explained that “If you need a stylus you have already wrong.”

So Stylus Pro iPad has sparked many protests, with the inevitable accusation to the new Apple of having betrayed the ideas of its founder. It was the same thing happened three years ago, with the presentation of the iPad mini, as many remembered as Jobs considered the standard 9.7-inch iPad the minimum size of the screen, under which it would be necessary “filing her fingers “in order to interact with icons and commands.

But if he were alive does not mean that Steve Jobs would not have changed my mind, because the introduction of the iPhone in today many things have changed, inside and outside Apple. On the other hand, for Jobs consistency was a profound concept but malleable: the writer never heard him swear that the iPod would have a built-in FM radio, then to see it presented as one of the most advanced features of the new model of music player Apple just a year later.

So Jobs would meanwhile stressed a linguistic difference: the Apple Pencil meanwhile is not a pen, but just a pencil. And a pencil has a different use from the pen: used to annotate, to draw, not to write. In fact there is (still?) IPad Pro a translation system of handwriting, such as exists on the Samsung Galaxy Note, one of the most popular mobile devices with stylus. But above all, with the Apple Pencil it does not interact with the operating system. As explained in the introductory video with Jonathan Ive usually suave British accent, “the touch is of course the first way to interact with the iPad.” The pencil is an option, to use only certain programs and for certain uses, for the rest of the new mega-Apple tablet functions as the smaller models.

This is the point, and that Apple is consistent: in 2007, the launch of the iPhone, Microsoft was still trying to push the first hybrid computer with Windows XP version of touch, while others invaded and Palm the market for digital assistants with equipment fitted with stylus. All used the resistive touch, which was less precise and required a higher pressure, and all worked with interfaces that were not designed to be used with a finger: icons microscopic, invisible writing, link difficult to hit. The stylus was the way to solve the original sin of an operating system designed to work with a mouse and keyboard.

The styles for iPad existed for quite some time, with prices ranging from a few euro a few dozen, but no one offers this level of precision and versatility: the result is due to the fact that uses a display improved version of the multi-touch technology. And the electronic pencil Apple, with its sensors, adds an additional mode of use, covering the needs of certain niche: creative artists, who now buy expensive graphics tablets, or doctors and professionals who need to interact with documents quickly and easily, to comment on them and share them with others. And maybe even schools, as at the moment they have not seen specific software dedicated to teaching. The others do not need Apple’s Pencil.
