Go to Google Maps and type “ Stanford University” , then taken photographs with the computer. Type the names of Larry Page and Sergey Brin on Google Images and scaricatene photos. Enter the site of the University of Stanford and the string “ look ” write BackRub : open any of the pages that appear and save. You have just put together a small digital album of memories, a series of links to an old story that (more or less) birthday today 17 years : the search engine more used in the world.

On September 27, does not appear in the official time-line, real. But in this case are authentic doodles, which search engine celebrate itself in this day since 2005. The reason is explained Danny Sullivan (among the first to review Google, by the way) on Search Engine Land: that year Yahoo! if it had come out with the announcement of an index higher than that of Google . The response of Bigg was a clever marketing move: he announced that he overtook his rival for her birthday.

That suddenly became 27.

On the other hand, As a symbolic dates, we are spoiled for choice. According to the very first engine created by Larry Page and Sergey Brin (the protagonists of this story), BackRub (which later becomes Google), the date to celebrate fall in January 1996. The domain Google .com , however, it was recorded September 15, 1996; the date of creation of the company is instead on September 4, although Google is celebrating the official 7.

After the digression, back to the story. So it was a some September day when Google Inc. finally was born, thanks to a big check of Andy Bechtolsheim (co-founder of Sun Microsystems ) 100 thousand bucks for the system created by Larry and Sergey.

The two had met in the summer of 1995, on the campus of Stanford. Sergey, open and sociable, in his second year of the course in Computer Science; Larry, more reserved, was the University of Michigan, had already graduated and was beginning his doctorate. He was looking for a brilliant idea. As his father had taught him, the academic in Michigan, from the PhD thesis depends career. There was always a symbol, however, that whipped in the head: W ww , the World Wide Web , officially opened four years ago.

Larry interest was mathematics that lay behind that world: every computer had a knot and every link on a web page was a connection between the nodes: the classic structure of a graph . Larry loved graphs and Web graph could be the world’s largest. And Sergey found the ideal person to develop the digital project, at the time, more important than the story.

As a result, here are some of the Google Doodle celebrating the past few years.
