Superluna eclipse, NASA explains what will happen on September 28 – The Republic

A COINCIDENCE quite rare, so the show is not to be missed. In the night between 27 and 28 September, when Italy will be 2:12 am, the Earth’s shadow will begin to darken the moon. At the height of the event, our satellite will be dyed a reddish color: why the phenomenon is also known as “Red Moon” or “moon of blood”.

The total eclipse is not the only reason to do a ” heel elevator. ” That 28 September will also be a “superluna”: the eclipse will happen in fact when the Moon will be near the perigee (the closest point to Earth during its orbit around our planet). For this reason, the lunar disk will appear about 14 percent bigger. It is this coincidence to make a special appointment. The combination of these factors has not happened for more than 30 years: the last time was in 1984 and there have been only five in the last century. The next will be in 2033.

But because during the eclipse the Moon does not disappear? The effect is due to the refraction of the sun’s rays when the Moon enters the shadow of the Earth, in fact, is still joined by some of the light of the Sun “bent” by Earth’s atmosphere. But not all: the wavelengths in the blue disperse, those toward the red instead reach the lunar surface and are reflected back to us, coloring it.

At 2:12 Italian time the moon is in the zone “twilight”, but the partial eclipse will start shortly after 3 am. The most spectacular stage, the eclipse shadow, will start at 4:47 until 5:22, when it will already be fairly low on the horizon. The phenomenon will end at 22.07 on 28 September
