Arduino, bursts of peace. Agreement on the ownership of the trademark – The Sun 24 Hours

The clash was hard, and for almost two years, he has breathed the air of the storm, and the courts. Now, however, seems to have reassured the sky above the Arduino, the tab that has revolutionized the world of the maker, a true flagship of Italian innovation. With a joint note, in fact, the two "enemies", who contended for the brand, and that is Arduino LLC (Arduino.cc) and the Arduino srl (Arduino.org), have formalized the agreement that puts an end to the divergences of the past few months. An agreement that will be completed by the end of this year, with the foundation of a new “Arduino ” Holding”, which will become, in fact, “the single point of contact – it is written in the note – for the distribution of all products, present and future”.

In addition, the Arduino will provide a foundation non-profit – “the Arduino Foundation – dedicated to the evolution of the development environment IDE, “continuing to strengthen the open source movement and offering support to the schools, the community and developers”.

The agreement marks the armistice that was a page in the turbulent industry of Italian technology. In the dance there were two causes: in the Usa, at the district Court of Massachusetts, the other at the court of Turin. The main accusation was a breach of trademark.

How was born the clash
But what happened in these years? Let’s start from the beginning. Arduino was born at the school of design, Ivrea, and the founders are Massimo Banzi, David Cuartielles, David Mellis and Tom Igoe. To produce the cards Banzi choose the Smart Projects of Strambino, a small town south of Ivrea. At the head of this company, there is Gianluca Martino, who soon finds himself in a dual role: in addition to being an industrial partner is also being made to become a full member of the co-founders. The agreements between the 5 expect that everyone will have a share of 20% of a partnership that in 2008 it will become the american Arduino Llc. In Italy, instead, it is the Smart Projects to register the trademark Arduino (and was born the Arduino Srl). But according to what according to what is learned by the cards, the judicial filed at the Court of the Massachusetts, the members are informed only in 2010 by Martino of the recording is made in Italy. And this, according to Arduino Llc, is in contrast with the constituent agreements: the company had the rights on the brand and the producers would have paid a royalty for the use.

confusion reigns: as told each other about the February 10, 2015 there are two companies that call the Arduino, have common holdings, and in spite of this are in dispute. To these correspond two sites photocopy (the said Arduino.cc and the baby Arduino.org). 2014 is the year of the clash of the judiciary, as recounted in detail by Sole24Ore on February 22, 2015

A new path
The agreement lays a the end of a complex story. Massimo Banzi, Co-Founder of Arduino LLC, is convinced that today is “one of the most significant in the history of the Arduino”. “The agreement – said – allows us to start a new course based on a constructive dialogue and with new energy for innovation in the fields of Education, IoT and in the world of the maker. The Arduino Foundation will allow us to enhance the essence of the community of Arduino within the ecosystem of open source and make our commitment to the open source even more strong. This is truly a new beginning for Arduino”.

“We’re thrilled to have resolved the issues of the last two years, and the team is working together to continue to offer the best hardware and open source software”, however, has commented Federico Musto, CEO and President of Arduino Srl. “We know how our partners and our developers are connected to the Arduino. said Musto – The growth of Arduino and loyalty to the project are amazing. To support the development of the world, IoT and innovation, the Arduino will continue to propose improvements in technology such as NFC, BLE, voice control”.
