Tursi (Uber Italy): “So we will take meals in the houses of the people of milan” – Il Sole 24 Ore

A degree in mechanical engineering with experimental thesis on the automatic transmission. Carlo Tursi mobility was in the destiny. Today, the 35-year-old bari, is general manager of Uber Italy. A charge came a few months ago, after a long pilgrimage between the Silicon Valley, London and Tel Aviv, where he has worked for some startups. On the occasion of the Italian launch of UberEATS, Tursi told us how the new service. And what do you think of the much-discussed sharing economy.

Arrived on the market of food delivery at a particular time, with the story of Foodora that has turned the spotlight on the state of things. Is not worried about this?
I’m Not going to talk about other companies. Are the things that I do not compete. I can say, however, that our model is substantially different. Although, from the point of view of the user, the service appears the same (I order a meal on a app and I get the food home), what Uber is, also in this case, what has always made Uber. Uber is a simple platform that connects supply and demand. Uber deals to help restaurants, on the one hand to find customers, and on the other to find the shippers, that is, those who delivery the food.

UberEats lands in Italy. Anyone can deliver food

These last are self-employed, independent, which, at a given time, are willing to make a delivery. We arrive on the Italian market with great enthusiasm, also to what happened to Uber in Italy. UberEATS is in service, brand new, and we are happy that Italy is among the first Countries in which part. We expect great things. In the cities in which it is launched is growing quickly, so the expectations are high. The consumption habits of those who live in cities are evolving, so I think that is only the beginning of a phenomenon more widely. A phenomenon related to the way of interface with the food habits changing, the style of life that changes.

You have already entered into exclusive agreements with some restaurant?
Uber seeks not exclusive, because we think that competition is a good thing. We will try to simply be the most talented of our competitors.

As you pay the shippers?
Uber provides a platform, does not pay the couriers. The couriers are paid by the restaurants through the platform, on the basis of deliveries and shall carry out and of the distance you travel. Uber keeps for themselves a percentage (from the restaurant).

percentage how much is it?
it is Not a given, but the public is variable. Depends on specific agreements, and by the amounts of the orders. However, I can say that it is aligned to the standards of the market.

But a courier how to make for each delivery?
there is a fixed amount. Or rather, there is a part of the compensation fixed and a variable which takes into account the distance travelled. That, however, is not the same thing as the customer pays for the delivery. During the launch we offer the service, UberEATS with free delivery.

From the point of view of taxation, as it is framed by a courier UberEATS?
In the start we have couriers independent, and the performance for now are classified as occasional performances, because the payment is at single delivery there are no constraints. The courier did not turn-based, has no obligations, not hours, not the assigned areas. When you want to go online go online, point. Being performance the occasional, Uber helps restaurants to ensure compliance with the compliance tax, providing the necessary documentation.
in the Meantime, however, Uber does business in Italy.

The app of Uber is the same around the world. The company that manages all services of the platform is headed in the Netherlands, and you can use the app anywhere.
However, a percentage of the transacted of UberEATS in Italy goes to Uber. What do you do with this revenue?

Uber keeps a very small percentage. And probably at the beginning will not generate any profit, as the majority of the new business. The real business, at least initially, will be among the restaurants and couriers.

Therefore, it seems to understand that the taxes you pay in the Netherlands.
the day When there will be profits from the platform, yes. But like the majority of the technological companies. Then, however, there is Uber Italy, which is a company entirely Italian. A Srl regular, with a dozen employees, that pay taxes in Italy.

Comes in EATS, but the sore point of Uber is always the Pop service.
it Was the only method of mobility lowcost in Italy. Unfortunately, today there is more. And there is more because the laws on the public transportation line were written in the ’90s. Laws written in and for the analog world. Then, by definition, cannot work in today’s world, a digital world.

things will change?
Without any doubt. They are already changing throughout the world. This is an inevitable process. It is only a matter of time. The laws are incapable of adapting to today’s realities, in the light of the technological developments of the last twenty years. And regardless of court orders, will be the legislator to make the necessary changes. You can read through a lens analog for a digital world.

in the Meantime, he always discusses sharing economy and of the sides still in the dark…
I have to say that they are often labeled with the word sharing economy some of the services that sharing have nothing. In America people call it the Gig Economy, the economy of the jobs. The world of work is changing, and it would be shortsighted not to take consciousness. In general, every change brings with it opportunities and risks. It would be a shame to waste all of the new opportunities offered by technological progress, by the application, only because this also involves risks. I think it is more sensible to try to understand what are the issues that are most delicate and important, and tackle them without fear. The problems must be solved without forgetting to respect the rights of consumers and workers. I believe that a worker is always a worker – regardless of whether they belong to the old economy or the new economy – and as such should have rights t hat must be respected. The problem is that the technological innovations are often so fast that you have to deal with the consequences only after they have already exploded. But in this case I think it is only a matter of time.
