PlayStation VR, the big challenge for Sony. Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, must have fear? – International Business Times Italia

it Is the great day of the PlayStation VR. Has experienced, promoted, presented, and now Sony has launched on the market its viewer virtual reality designed exclusively for its home console PlayStation 4. An important launch for two reasons: it alters the balance of power in the console market, and it is a bet that’s anything but certain for the japanese company, which has worked for years on the ex-"Project Morpheus" (as he was called temporarily).

Since 2013, the company showed to the press the results of his steps forward in virtual reality. If Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, at the time the two flag-bearers of the VR for the PC, they have opted for a 360-degree experience, for obvious reasons, Sony has staked everything on video games and on a price that is modest compared to some competitors: 399 euro, to which must be added the 69 euros for a PS Camera, built-in required.

A result has already been achieved: the support and enthusiasm of the third-party. Many companies that have marketed a game in conjunction with the launch or planning to do so in the coming months: Warner Bros Interactive, Electronic Arts, Ubisoft, Capcom, 505 Games, Harmonix. It seeks especially to ride the wave of novelty. We are the first commercial results of PlayStation VR only in the coming weeks and we will have a financial framework of more or less precise than in January, when Sony will present the quarterly of December.

In the meantime, the reviews of the international have painted a viewer is certainly not perfect (hey, if the Rift Lives and cost at least 700 euro’s a reason, on a technological level, there is), but who can reach the fans with a more competitive price while offering an experience of virtual reality is more than enough and enjoyable. The biggest problem of the launch is probably the lack of a true "killer application" that could justify the price of the ticket.

There are many titles taken from popular series, such as Star Wars Battlefront: X-Wing VR Mission or Batman: Arkham VR, but they seem to be more demos that show "what can you do with this viewer" instead of experiences real. Can be compared to the launch games of a console: good, but the consumer, the veteran knows that the best will only come after months (or even years) of experimentation with the hardware.

At launch, will be available the different games: Rez Infinite, PlayStation VR Worlds, Hustle Kings, Rigs: Mechanized Combat League, Battlezone VR, Until Dawn: a Rush of Blood, Eve: Valkyrie, Eve: Gunjack, Rollercoaster Dreams, Thumper, Driveclub VR, Super Stardust Ultra VR, Tumble VR, Hatsune Miku VR: Future Live, Carnival Games, VR, and Harmonix Music VR.

Other manufacturers, instead, they are focused on the accessories. Bigben Interactive, for example, has launched a kit that includes: support for the PS Room, wipes hygiene, microfiber cloth, double cable to charge two pad PS4 at the same time and cover for the lenses of the viewer. A solution that is very generic, but it is clear that, as in the days of the Wii, many companies will be able to have fun with the various accessories for this new platform.

PLAYSTATION VR AGAINST the RIFT AND LIVES: the RIGHT to COMPARE them?

the Rift and Lives need to be afraid? The market of virtual reality will follow the same patterns of the other segments of consumer electronics and will be divided into three groups: those who want the best, those who are not willing to spend too much but want a good compromise of technology and who, finally, satisfied with the most cost-effective solution. And in the same way, smartphone and tablet, or computer, devices like Samsung Gear VR and Google’s Daydream, the cost of which does not exceed 200 euro, they will still be favorites.

with regards To video games, however, support mostly Android games for your smartphone, that, except in very rare cases, do not offer a gaming experience complete and long-lived. Accordingly, the user interested in the video games remain two options: an ideal compromise between quality and cost as a PlayStation VR (we’re still talking about at least 460 euros about to start playing if you already have PS4) or the best of the best as the Oculus Rift (more suitable to sit and play) or HTC’s Lives, which goes well with large spaces, thanks to its characteristics of position tracking).

Two different users, two commercial needs. Back to the question, the answer is: yes, the PlayStation VR will steal a slice of the public games-to the two rivals, and no, Rift and Lives do not need to “tremble” because you ask goals a little more ambitious.

In particular, with the Rift, Facebook and Oculus have a program far more extensive and far-sighted, which not only includes video games. We talk about social VR, to innovate the drug and the use of multimedia in general (to share movies and photos, for example, in a virtual room). All of the features that PlayStation VR does not have. It would be like comparing two different cars, a sports car and a family: there is a better in and of itself, but there are two business responses to two of the requirements (economic and not only).

what is certain, however, is that PlayStation VR now provides an option rather economic for those who are interested to experience the games in virtual reality. The consumer may then decide if the trade-off of quality compared to their rivals is worth the proverbial candle.
