– On May 22, we celebrate the International Biodiversity Day, established by the UN in 1992 to take stock of the state of health living species that inhabit the Earth. The 2015 edition is dedicated to the islands and their natural heritage endangered by climate change, pollution and land use. In Europe, Italy holds the greatest treasure of biodiversity, but more than 20% is likely to disappear.

The objective of the UN and Legambiente is to highlight the many dangers that threaten animal and plant species they depend on 600 million people, about one-tenth of the world population. Coral reefs are threatened by unsustainable fishing and tourism, pollution, natural disasters, reduction of wetlands, over-exploitation of fish: they are a great danger to mammals, turtles, birds, fish and ecosystems, as well as local economies.

The “treasure” Italian – The rich heritage of Italy, compared to Europe has more than 30% of animal species (58 thousand) and almost 50% of the plant (about 8,000). But of all this wealth “more than 20% of species are threatened with extinction,” notes Legambiente. A threat that has negative effects on the health and human habits. According to Coldiretti, in fact, in the last century in Italy there were 8 thousand varieties of fruit but now you get to just under 2,000, and of these, 1,500 are at risk disappearance. In practice to disappear from our table were three varieties of fruit on four, but thanks to farmers many plants have been saved, from corn to tomatoes red stripes on blue potatoes.

The importance of forests – 80% of the Earth’s biological diversity of the planet is kept in the forests, whose defense, detects the WWF, is crucial not only for 1.6 billion people who depend directly for food, medicines and other resources vital, but also for those who live “far away”. Forests handle the regulation of the global climate and global biogeochemical cycles, stabilization and soil enrichment, primary resources such as wood and food security for the populations in developing countries.

A endangered species on six – Without a stop to global warming, scientists say, “a kind of six animals and plants in danger of extinction by 2100″. The OECD estimated economic damages for the loss of biodiversity between 2 thousand and 5 thousand billion dollars per year, higher than the wealth produced by the vast majority of the nations of the Earth. A heritage “mistreated” that are needed “now more protection and legality, more common sense and more culture”, warns the National Board of Animal Protection (ENPA) that asks the policy more controls and more.

Galletti: “Feeding the planet without harming the environment” – “Feeding the population without damaging the environment is one of the most important and complex challenges facing the planet, which is closely connected with that of combating climate change” says Environment Minister Gian Luca Galletti. He explains that the World Biodiversity Day “takes on even more significance during the Expo, whose central themes are the fight against poverty, food security, nutrition and sustainable development: all key players in the defense and the ‘ integration of biodiversity in the world ”.
