“We regret that this happened in a time when we are presenting a highly innovative product and very important for the growth of the internet TV in Italy» . Andrea Zappia, managing director of Sky Italy, responds well to the Sole 24 Ore at the presentation of “Sky TV Online Box”: a small device that can transform any TV into a smart TV with an HDMI input. Which, translated into practice, it means the ability to watch TV at home on Sky Online – and then the Sky programs – stream and unconstrained subscription.

A presentation that takes place in the aftermath of the outbreak the hubbub around the awarding of the TV rights for the championships in Serie A for the 2015-18 (see other articles on page 11) that is likely “to obscure a passage that is the element that completes the strategy of Sky”, this on satellite, but also with IPTV – with the offer recently launched Telecom- and now with the Internet TV (just connect this box to the Internet at home via Ethernet cable or Wi-fi and plug it, in fact, the door hdmi).

A game of this internet tv, not just because it comes with increasing insistence arrival of Netflix in Italy. “We are convinced – he says Zappia -to be able to be the player number in this market in Italy. From today we have the interface, to which we add the freshness of our content. And remember that we have four of the top studios in exclusive Disney, 21st Century Fox, Paramount, Sony. ”

Sky Online was launched in April last year as a platform of videostreaming, inserted in a market where there are competing mainly Infinity (Mediaset), Timvision and Chili TV (but does not have an offer subscription, but Tvod, ie you only pay for what you see). With the “streaming box” presented yesterday the offer of Sky Online (previously only available on PCs, tablets, consoles and on some models of smart TV), comes into practice on all TV sold for about ten years. And there are app interface “partners” including Spotify, Facebook, Vevo, Vimeo and Red Bull TV.

Bouches sewn on numbers of clients expected (“we quoted ‘) as the rumors that would see Sky in talks with Viacom – publisher MTV – to acquire the channel number 8 or in negotiations for a partnership with Mediaset Premium on (“do not comment on rumors,” it is repeated like a mantra). Note however the prices: “box” on sale today at 49.99 euro a month in film and entertainment and the chance to have a second month to 1 euro. The offer starts from € 9.99 per month (for the entertainment channels) to 14.99 per month (for the film). To these you can combine individual events, including sports, pay-per-view to 4.99 euro.

In short, prices lower than those that pay a subscriber conventional outlets (ARPU average of 43 euro). Sky at home, however, exclude the problem “cannibalization.” “We’re talking – says Zappia – a different target. There are now 1.5 million people in Italy who watch TV via streaming, people that link to content, but maybe not in an as wide as that which we offer traditional subscriber. ”

The aim is then to those who do not want to bind to add a subscription to customers to 4.746 million subscribers at March 31, 2015. Numbers in growth by two quarters, although Sky in Italy is still slightly below the figure for March 2014 (4,751,000). And on the horizon is the new season of the Champions League will be exclusive Mediaset. “Obviously we would have preferred it the Champions League. But in our offer there all Serie A match with 1 of 3 exclusive, complete with the exclusive Series B, Premier League, Europa League, Bundesliga, Euro Qualifiers. And then F1, MotoGP, RWC, NBA, the big tennis, golf and much more. ” In short, “everyone goes his own way. It has never been questioned an agreement (on the Champions League, ed. ). “
