Oranges The Sicilian citrus are renowned for their quality and naturalness. The various grapefruits, oranges, lemons and limes are processed for juices, jams and juices. The residue remaining, called pulp , is however a problem. Dispose of it is complicated because it is a huge amount because it is very expensive. Just think that every year in Sicily are produced 340 thousand tons of pulp, and its disposal costs about 10 million euro. What to do then? Simple, turn it into energy . The initiative was born in Catania, and was sponsored by the Department of Agriculture, the District of Sicily Citrus, Food and Environment, University of Catania, the cooperative Empedocles and is supported by funding unconditioned of The Coca-Cola Foundation. Through a system is exploited anaerobic digestion to produce electricity, biomethane, bioproducts and nutrients to the soil.

According to an estimate that was calculated with 20 anaerobic digesters could dispose of waste damp of Sicily , and in return you would get clean energy . Should the project work is already the idea to dispose of in the same way other wastes such as pomace, pomace and blades of prickly pears. With 500 cubic meters of biogas could activate a generator capable of producing a Mega Watt of electricity, enough to power about 333 homes.
