SAN FRANCISCO – The cyber threats increase and the Pentagon looks to Silicon Valley, where he is preparing to open its first office. The goal is to strengthen its technological capabilities more quickly and cost-effectively as a result of fears of the rise of China. To convey the new initiative of the Pentagon’s Defense Secretary, Ash Carter, who in the last three days he has met in the Valley some top managers of major companies, including Facebook and venture capitalists. The headquarters of the Pentagon in Silicon Valley was founded with the idea to identify and fund technology projects to develop weapons of the future. The decision – says the US Department of Defense – stems from the need to create quickly and without having to rely on funding “monstre” advanced weaponry and at the same time avoid that China will overtake the United States in this area is considered strategic. The move follows that of hundreds of other American companies (by car manufacturers to banks) in order to have more direct access to the technology produced by the Californian startup. But many companies and venture-capital are worried by the landing of the Pentagon in the Valley, especially the fear of falling into the web of bureaucracy and the absence of a well-defined budget. The office of the Pentagon should open within a month, Moffett Field, and I would work 15 employees. It is not the first time that the Department of Defense wants to have a key role within the technology community: in the 70 funded research on microprocessors that were used to create precision weapons and subsequently used for the development of computers.
