Huawei P8, when China is serious: Apple and Samsung in the viewfinder – BBC

Huawei P8, in four different colors

LONDON – Huawei has long been a giant network that challenges the Swedish Ericsson (and now Nokia and Alcatel-Lucent). But also in the world of devices, smartphones and tablets (now also smartwatche and “bracelets”), is a well-established. Xiaomi with Motorola and Lenovo-is part of a trio of China, who disputes the lowest rung of the podium in the world market. The distance from Samsung and Apple is still very large in terms of market share, but the growth potential is enormous. Unlike compatriots, Huawei is the only Chinese company to be present on the Italian and European market with its own brand of smartphones (Lenovo for now relies on Motorola) and has already built a consensus (“In Italy we are above the ’8% of market share, “he reminded us in London Daniele De Grandis, executive director of Huawei Italy) thanks to the good price / performance ratio of its devices. To distance itself but from an image of cheap handsets, Huawei needs a smartphone to the top: we tested with Ascend P6 and P7, now relaunches with P8 (which updates the initials following the sequential order of the past years, but loses Ascend the name). Indeed raises a whole series P, which also comes in super-smartphones (or mini-tablet?) P8 Max 6.8 inches and (in the future) with a P8 Lite.

Metal

P8 comes to about a half away from the Mate 7 , a phablet that had a (deserved) success, selling more than 4 million units so far in the world. Huawei P8 tip but the wider public, as outside of China are rather small in the percentages of those who choose a 6-inch as the Mate 7.
With its 5.2 inches and a super slim design (6.4 mm, less than 6 iPhone and Galaxy S6) and pleasant although not very original (reminiscent of a Sony Z3 mixed with an iPhone ….), the P8 can do downtown. The body is all metal and, unlike competitors, the camera 13 megapixels does not protrude at the back despite the very small thickness. The size are contained tuttosommato (144.9 x 72.1 x 6.4 mm and a weight of 144 grams ) thanks to a good relationship between the screen, which is Full HD (1920 x 1080) , and the front surface: 78% is occupied by the display that is practically “borderless” (unframed) on the long sides.
Considering the reduced thickness, the battery is quite generous (2680mAh, for a day of intensive use abundant ). The processor is made by Huawei, and is a HISILICON Kirin 930 octa-core 64-bit. There is no shortage 3 GB of RAM, 16 or 64 GB of internal data expandable via microSD.

Touch knuckles

Daniele De Grandis, executive director of Huawei Italy with the new P8

Huawei worked with care on all aspects. There are innovative features that intrigue. One is the ability to interact with the display knuckles : it is recognized that the touch is not made with the fingertips and click functions such as crop (crop) an image. Or the “ trovatelefono ” when we do not remember where we left: saying “Hey, buddy” and then “Where are you?” (The phrases are customizable), the P8 responds, “Hey, I ‘ m here “. Little things that do not change the user experience so momentous but that show the attention of Chinese colossus in the will to go beyond the stereotypical image “China = low cost.”

Camera

Even on camera, always a critical point for a top of the range, Huawei has tried to give the best to future customers. The main one is 13 megapixels and above all has an optical stabilizer (OIS) very efficient, a dedicated image processor that Huawei declares quality equal to that of an SLR and a number of other functions (macros up to 4 cm, of Selfie Group thanks to the wide-angle front room 8 Megapixel, etc) that will delight lovers of “smartphotography”.

Full speed networks

The Chinese group has certainly considerable know-how within the networks, who knows how to transfer effectively on its smartphones, among the best in the market as a reception and stability of the line. On this P8, Huawei says it can provide more “notches” in spite of the metal body, thanks to a particular engineering of antennas. Performance even on high-speed trains, even when traveling over 300 km / h. And when you get off the plane, thanks to the “Roaming +”, the … Richard Yu said the P8 is able to connect to the network of a foreign operator 3 times faster than the competitors: from an average time of 120 seconds it will drop to 40. The wi-fi, thanks to an intelligent management and a “historic” connections, you can hook the fastest network, making the switch automatically from a wi-fi to another within of the home or building. Interresante also double slot for SIM: a main and a Micro Nano Sim Sim you can take (wanting) the place of micro Sd, transforming the P8 in a Dual Sim phone.

The challenge of prices

Among the most interesting accessories shown during launch is also a case with e-ink screen , like E Ink ebook reader (Kindle, Kobo, etc): serve reading ebook and get information such as agenda, weather and clock with a very low energy consumption.
short, a very nice smartphone that can please (we will test in the coming weeks) to the Italian public, but must win the difficult challenge the Price . It is far below the best-known competitors such as Apple and Korean. But it is not even from “cinafonino” cheap: 499 € for the 16 GB model (colors: gray and champagne), 599 for the Premium version 64GB (colors: black and gold). For the P8 Max prices are 549/649 euro in the two versions, but his arrival is not expected at the time in Italy, told De Grandis.
