Clear, an app to erase the past by social embarrassing – The Republic

HAS A NAME that leaves no room for too many interpretations and an ambitious goal: making scorched earth of all that could have “stained” our digital image on social networks and that could sooner or later affect, in real life too. From the phrase or embarrassing photos, published in a moment of intoxication, to the post in which we complained our former employer: Clear is the new app that allows to probe the content we have published over the years on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and delete tweets and posts that we consider inappropriate and potentially offensive.
He designed Ethan Czahor , a thirty year old who seems to know quite well the matter. Hired in February 2015 as CTO in the staff of the former governor of Florida, Republican Jeff Bush, the young advisor was fired after just two days. The reason? The media had discovered some old tweets and posts his blog, featuring content sexist, homophobic or soaked with an irreverent humor and not very politically correct. “After college I went to Hollywood to study improvisational theater. I used Twitter to test my sketch, were largely contained humorous addressed to my circle of friends. After changing career and finally got the job of my dreams these contents were decontextualized me look for the person who does not have, an operation that cost me my career. I created Clear to ensure that this will never happen to anyone, “says Ethan on its platform.

The app, which is currently experimental stage, is designed to detect all content deemed offensive or considered “at risk” we have strewn over time on social networks. It works by searching specific keywords, such as analyzing all sentences with references to ethnic minorities, sexual orientation or be in a language considered inappropriate. And since, as noted by the same Czahor, no app can currently understand the context within which the contents have been written, once identified tweet and post indicted, their cancellation is at your own risk. Clear also develops a preliminary investigation, developing a real scale of “reliability” of users on every single social network. “My generation is the first to have a lifetime on-line. What happened to me can happen to anyone, in any field. What you have written lightly, maybe 10 years ago, remains on the web and can be used in the future against you, “said Czahor at TIME. And the data seem to bear him out.

According to a survey last July, made from the site for job search Career Builder, half of companies use social media to find out attitudes and backgrounds of potential candidates discover content that can bring in 43% of cases to not hiring. Data soared, when you consider that in 2012 the same figure was 36%. The contents that have a greater impact on a negative outcome of the selection process are considered inappropriate photos, post praising the use of alcohol and drugs, discriminatory content, invectives against the company last year.

Clear is currently unavailable in the experimental stage, for iPad and iPhone. To use the app you need to register and put on a waiting list, while Czahor promises to implement it soon on other platforms and make these available to control the content of their research on Google or blog post. But the impression is that, whatever happens, the platform is only a first step towards one direction: the need to control the flow of digital content we put on the network every day. Why write on social networks is not write on the sand. An awareness that there is a growing wildfire among users, businesses and developers.
