Climate, warm seas too: amphibian species “choose” the land – TGCOM

– The rise of ocean temperatures are pushing the so-called amphibious species to choose to live on land. This was revealed by a study conducted at the University of Florence on the population of crabs in the Tyrrhenian Sea and in the journal Nature . The warming of the seas is the engine of an evolutionary process important for the creatures that live between the sea and the mainland: the transition from aquatic respiration in the air.

Climate, seas too hot: amphibian species & quot; choose & quot; the earth

The mechanism, the researchers note, is the same that allowed the transition from marine ancestors terrestrial species . To complete the study, the Italian university has partnered with the Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, the most authoritative institution for the study of climate change in Europe. The crabs surveyed belong to common species pachygrapsus marmoratus , collected Calafuria (Livorno).

Too hot, little oxygen – The objective of the study was to identify the evolutionary mechanisms by which species of amphibians are able to cope with climate change, “giving” breathing underwater to prevent the collapse of oxygen caused by the heating of water. “The crabs allow us to understand how it can be done one of the most important evolutionary steps of history, which has led to the evolution of terrestrial species,” he said the zoologist Stephen Cannicci.

An extraordinary evolutionary mechanism – The leader of the research team also stressed the primacy of his discovery: “We have shown for the first time that rising temperatures of ocean waters driving an evolutionary process as important as that of the colonization of the land “.

” At a time like the present, characterized by a steady and rapid rise in temperature of the atmosphere and oceans – he added – an evolutionary strategy that can be implemented by the species that live in the the sea and the land is, in effect, to become more terrestrial and marine less “.
