Google opens division for the Virtual Reality – PianetaCellulare.it

Google has opened a new division that will focus exclusively on the development of projects related to virtual reality, a move that comes in the face of growing competition from Facebook and its subsidiary Oculus. The announcement was made earlier by Re / Code, and Google declined further comment.

The Google CEO Sundar Pichai has named one of his deputies, Clay Bavor, head of the division. Bavor, vice president for product management at Google, followed the services of the company and Gmail Drive. The management of these now goes to Diane Greene, veteran board member of Google who already ‘manages the cloud computing giant’s Mountain View.

With the new division, Google will increase the share of its bet in the field of virtual reality, the industry that this year is preparing to grow thanks to the market launch, after Gear VR Samsung, viewers expected as Oculus Rift, HTC Lives and Playstation VR.

Google for virtual reality economic, accessible from virtually anyone who has a smartphone, launched in 2014 Google Cardboard, support from about 20 euro made of cardboard carton that turns a smartphone into a device for viewing 3D content. The device also allows you to ‘get’ the 360-degree video YouTube.

Google in 2015, has also invested $ 542 million in Magic Leap, a startup specializing in virtual reality that hopes to replace him one day Computer screens and smartphones with the virtual reality interfaces managing to bring 3D images in the real world.

The project more ‘ambitious but’ of Microsoft, and is called HoloLens. It ‘was presented to be “the first holographic device for free, without the need for cables, telephones or connect to a PC.” Presents holographic lenses transparent and high-definition ambient sound so that you can see and hear the holograms in real space. The holographic lenses of HoloLens overlap “holograms” the real world around the wearer, combining the physical world with the digital. HoloLens is the technology used, for example, by Volvo for its virtual showroom.

All of these projects and others who may have been in development but we have no news of which will be under the new division of Google. The road is uphill all the way for the company to grow in the field, as the Samsung offers its VR helmet Gear for less than $ 100; by the summer will come Oculus Rift Facebook (bookable low from January 6 to about $ 600), HTC Lives (advance sale from 29 February) and something should arrive also from Sony that gamers can use with the Playstation.
