Facebook, Twitter & co., The EU proposes to ban use under 16 without parental permission – The Messenger

No Facebook and Twitter for children under 16 years if there is no parental permission. The proposal comes from the upper echelons of the EU, which is working on a change in the regulation for the protection of personal data. To take care of the project, the Commission on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs of the European Parliament, now ready to rule on a separate amendment. The day chosen for the vote is tomorrow, when it might be impressed the first step towards the breakthrough.

If yes delegation, in fact, the final approval of the change to the text lacks only a second and more important way free, the Parliament itself. The clearance Brussels would tie definitely and inseparably use by those under 16 of the most popular social network (and Instagram, Google+, WhatsApp and snapchat) authorization of mom and dad, a prospect that does not like of course to the giants social networks.

A protest, however, there are not only companies. Opposed the amendment is also the Diana Award Youth Board, an organization committed to the defense of children and always against bullying and promoting the site of a Change.org petition which called on the EU to withdraw the proposal because it “unnecessary. This age threshold higher – says the document – could encourage children between 13 and 15 to lie about their age. The kids age 13 and older have access to online services for a long time, so artificial and sudden change of this threshold probably will push many of them to pretend to continue to access rather than to seek the consent of their parents. ”
