Brazil, WhatsApp blocked by the judge for 48 hours – PianetaCellulare.it

A Brazilian judge overturned the order of the lower court that wanted to block messaging service WhatsApp owned by Facebook in the country for two days. The new ruling came about 12 hours after the ban came into force.

A Brazilian court has ordered local telecommunications company to block access to popular messaging service WhatsApp in the country for 48 hours , namely 2 days. The order came into force at midnight on Thursday 17 December 2015, which means that the Brazilians could not have access to WhatsApp in all its forms until 23:59 on Friday 18 December. The sentence was later lifted the ban with about 36 hours in advance of the end of the same.

The ban was approved after the repeated failure of WhatsApp to a court order that was passed by the government in July this year, and it is related to criminal proceedings in a case involving a drug dealer who would use the messaging service owned by Facebook in the commission of crimes.

The order overturned . “Considering the constitutional principles, it seems reasonable that millions of users are affected due to the inertia of the company to provide information,” the judge said in his ruling, which has decided to fine WhatsApp and removing the prohibition on access previously imposed .

Why Whatsapp was stuck in Brazil? This past July, to WhatsApp was requested information from the Brazilian courts regarding an alleged drug dealer who had used the application to commit crimes. The trafficker was later found to belong to one of the largest criminal gangs in Brazil. WhatsApp has not complied with the court orders, failing to provide the requested information.

WhatsApp is the most popular mobile app in the country, used by 93% of respondents in a recent poll.

Commenting the order, the CEO of WhatsApp Jan Koum said: “We are disappointed the shortsighted decision to block access to WhatsApp, a communication tool from which many Brazilians are dependent, and it is sad to see the Brazil isolate themselves from the rest of the world.”

It is not the first time that Whatsapp ends the target of telephone companies in Brazil, but never before today there has been a court. This block of WhatsApp in Brazil decided by a judge of the court of St. Paul, even if temporary, would create a precedent now, other countries or even Brazil itself may decide on future occasions to prevent access to the messaging service for a Somehow judiciary.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and co-founder of Facebook, wrote that Facebook is working to convince the Brazilian authorities to remove the block decided by the court. “This is a sad day for Brazil. To date, Brazil had been an ally in creating an open Internet,” said Mark. At the same time it took the opportunity to promote the other messaging application Facebook, Messenger: “So far, Facebook Messenger is still active and can be used to communicate.”

What if in Italy Whatsapp was blocked for two whole days? It has already created chaos on the rare occasions when the service has not been available for a few hours for problems technical, so it’s hard to imagine what would happen if WhatsApp was deliberately blocked for days. It would not be a bad thing, at least those who use it could ‘detoxify’ from WhatsApp for a while ‘.

In the hours that WhatsApp is blocked in Brazil, the messaging service rival Telegram revealed that its application has been downloaded over a million times in Brazil.

now, therefore, WhatsApp should be back on line in Brazil, before the expiry of the ban scheduled for 23:59 on Friday, December 18.

Article Updated on 12/18/2015 to add information on rollover of the judgment.
