The map Recent seabed dated back to the 70, then more than 40 years ago, with the accuracy that you could require at the time, but in recent days has finally been realized and made available online the first digital map of the ocean floor, made from School of Geosciences at the University of Sydney who has made available to the international scientific community.

The work will help scientists to better understand the response of the oceans to environmental changes and also reveals that the deep basins are much more complex than previously thought.

“In order to understand environmental changes in the oceans – said in a statement Adriana Dutkiewicz University of Sydney – we need to know better what to geological level has been preserved in the seabed. ” These, he says, are a “cemetery” of fossilized remains of microscopic marine creatures called phytoplankton. “The composition of these remains can help decipher the answer passed the oceans to climate change”.

“The difference between the new and the old map is a bit ‘like comparing a barren tundra in a tropical paradise exotic rich in diversity – says Adriana Dutkiewicz-. The new digital map of sediment provides a missing link to constrain the overall relations between the seabed and the surface of the sea “.
