Space, three astronauts flying on the Soyuz to the ISS – The Republic

MOSCOW – It took off at 22:42 Moscow time (20:42 to Italian), from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, the Soyuz capsule that brought on the Station International Space (ISS), NASA astronaut Scott Kelly retired (51 years) and Russian cosmonauts Mikhail Kornienko (54 years) and Gennady Padalka (56 years). The first two are twins and will remain on the International Space Station for a year, double the normal duration of the missions of this type.

They will have to study the effects of the prolonged presence of humans in space in view of the planned manned missions to Mars . Padalka instead will return to Earth in six months, but with the journey started today will beat the record of non-consecutive days spent in space. On return, Padalka will in fact spent 878 days in orbit.

As for Kelly and Kornienko, there will set any records, because the record of consecutive days in space belongs to the Russian Valeri Poliakov, who spent 437 on station Russian Mir between 1994 and 1995. The three astronauts parties today will join the crew that currently occupies the ISS: the Italian Samantha Cristoforetti, Russian Anton Shkaplerov and the American Terry Virts.
