The research lab Google X Google is home to bold experiments like cars without drivers, balloons to spread Internet in the world, and Google Glass, glasses Web-connected company in Mountain View. A Google likes to remember, however, that the laboratory produces something else: the failure, a lot of projects that fail.

Google Tuesday acknowledged some of the missteps made the Glass project, which has been an object full of controversy since its announcement in April 2012. Google has also given access to the device to a community of early testers called “Explorer”.

“We took a big decision and at the same time a non- so-great decision, “said Astro Teller, head of Google X, in a speech at the South by Southwest conference on technology, cinema and music, in Austin, Texas.

The best idea of Google was the creation of the program Explorer. The name, however, has misled “We have allowed, and sometimes even encouraged, too much attention to the program,” he said. “We also did things to encourage people to think that this was already a finished product.”

Google Glass has been the focus of attention of many fans in the industry since its launch. Since then, the fascination for the device has given way to be despised. First, there is the issue of privacy for how people can use the inbuilt camera in Glass. Second, many people who have tried Glass said they have taken part of the Explorer program for the curiosity, but the interest in the use of the device is dropped with each passing week. Third, at the end of Google in January decided to close the Explorer program, although the company said it is working on a consumer version.

Google, the largest search engine in the world, created Google X labs to test new designs and products to broaden the scope beyond the web search.

Teller Tuesday also spoke of other initiatives to which the laboratory is working, including balloons Wi-Fi Project Loon and testing of cargo delivery by drone, the Project Wing. Teller has listed other mistakes made by his company, recalling the expedition in a remote area in the South Pacific to retrieve a balloon exploded. Teller said he’ll provide an update on the progress of the project Loon later this year.

“Failure does not mean do not succeed,” said Teller. “It can happen, but at least we tried this. We can go on, more intelligently.”.

The project Google Glass has entered a new phase in January when the company decided to end the experimentation of augmented reality glasses. As part of this change, Glass is now overseen by former Apple executive and founder of Nest Tony Fadell.

Just as before, the project is managed by Ivy Ross while Fadell continues to follow the developments which ‘ inside Google. The current owners of a pair of Glass will still be able to use the glasses as before, but will not receive new software updates.

As for developers who are currently working on applications for Glass, a spokesman says the company still encourages them to continue to work on their applications because a new version is coming soon.

new version of Glass will likely be released by the end of ‘ year, and most likely will be presented in June when it will host the annual conference for developers Google I / O Developer Conference.
