A couple of days is circulating on social networks and not just a rather alarming news . According to data from local weather stations combined with satellite observations in the first half of April Greenland is experiencing above the eastern one melting ice very quickly and well ahead compared to the beginning of the thawing season that should be statistically in the month of May (first decade). the news appeared on several newspapers also internationally known as the New York Times as well as number of science portals of the network so we can not neglect it because the sources seem reliable (Danish Meteorological Institute).
What would happen in reality ‘ a’ heatwave abnormal , very much like the one that occurred on the Mediterranean just a few days ago, it would extend the continental segment American towards the northeastern United States propagating then towards the arctic Greenlandic industry . Temperature of different degrees above normal would be so interested for many days (from 3 to 4 April until 12-13 April) across the frozen surface taking well over the threshold of freezing. The data actually reported average daily temperatures at several stations between +5 and + 10 ° as in a hot July day. This would have resulted in a sudden early termination of the ice with about a month earlier than in the middle.
Hard to say if the incident can be classified in an anomaly linked to global warming , but since it is the first time that you experience a phenomenon of this magnitude, it could be the case. It seems that already more than 10% of the Greenland ice is dissolved in the space of a week or less more than 1mm . Paradoxically however nothing is known of what is happening in the the rest of the Arctic sector because the radiometric sensor placed on the satellite as it shall monitor the situation of the sea ice went out of use and is providing incorrect data from the beginning of April .
