Android, 400 million malware exposed devices alert Google – PianetaCellulare.it

Google, for the second year, has published the annual report on Android security. The report provides, in summary, a look at how Google’s services protect the Android mobile platform and illustrates the new security features introduced in 2015. One of the objectives for which Google compiles this report is to provide information on the security status of Android, the platform for mobile devices more ‘widely adopted around the world.

in 2015, Google has invested heavily in machine learning and in event correlation to detect potentially dangerous behaviors on Android. The protection of users from malware and other potentially harmful apps engines and more than 6 billion apps installed each day, to protect users from threats to network and device, analyzing more than 400 million devices a day. Google also has millions of users of Chrome on Android from unsafe websites with the Safe Browsing.

Google last year has also been trying to make installing potentially harmful apps on Google harder Play , managing to reduce by 40% the chances of installation compared to 2014. the attempts to install potentially harmful apps concerned in particular the collection of data categories (down 40%, up all’0, 08% of installations), spyware (reduced by over 60% to 0.02% of installations) and “Hostile downloader” (down by over 50% to 0.01% of installations).

Google, in his report, said that the potentially harmful apps were installed in 2015 to less than 0.15% of the devices that install app only from Google Play. Taking into account the devices on which you have installed the app outside of Google Play, on average less than 0.5% of Android devices has installed a potentially harmful apps last year, a percentage more ‘or less like that of 2014.

Although Google always recommended to install applications that are not found in its Play Store , the company said it is committed to also protect users who install apps outside of Google Play via the tool Verify apps , whose efficiency has been improved by over 50%.

in 2015, Google introduced Android 6.0 Marshmallow , version of Android that has brought with it greater security features and safety controls such as full disk encryption (now a requirement for all new devices Marshmallow) and with support for encrypting data on SD card. In addition, users can manage permissions for individual apps, and the new startup verification system provides security for the phone from the bootloader to the operating system. Other support came with marshmallows is for added security for fingerprint readers and the SELinux improvements.

The future of the Android security? Google promises that it will continue to promote research on security of Android and will invest to strengthen ecosystem protection.

Last year, Android has become part of the Vulnerability Rewards Program Google, which offers compensation to researchers in the field of security when they identify bugs and report them. Through this program, the company is able to solve more than 100 vulnerabilities, giving researchers more than 200 thousand dollars for their reports.

In August, Google also launched the Safety Update on basic program monthly to the Android Open Source Project. Since then, manufacturers have provided monthly security updates for many different Android devices, but despite this are still many Android devices that do not yet receive monthly updates.

“More transparency, informed debate on the safety and continuous innovation help us to preserve the safety of users’ Google said in the company blog. “We will continue to work to improve security services for Android and interact with the ecosystem and all the research community on security in 2016 and beyond.”
