Announced for days, yesterday in San Francisco at the exhibition World Internet of Things, the new offensive of the Korean giant in the interconnected world has become reality. Samsung has presented Artik, first name of the platform that will give developers (and companies) and the hardware (chips) and the software (including the environment SmartThings Open Cloud) for the creation of equipment and devices dedicated to ‘IoT. It is specifically for micro electronic cards, ready to be easily configured and to connect to Internet, on which are mounted processors, communication chips, sensors and other components for “give” intelligence to things.
We talk that a ‘architecture, rather of an ecosystem, from which to create a multitude of connected objects, from simple markers to the drones of course for passing the hub (the thinking brains) of the smart home. It is a step forward, and very decided, to Samsung. And for many reasons. One of these is the gauntlet that the Asian manufacturer throws in the direction of “chip maker” Stars and Stripes, beginning with Intel, which are also very committed to mark the ground in a market (one of the Internet of Things) with enormous potential.
On stage at the Moscone Center, to announce Artik, occurred Young Sohn, president of Samsung Electronics, and that is the manager who is leading the strategy of the Korean nell’Iot, took off last August from Silicon Valley with ‘acquisition of startup SmartThings, whose technology to control appliances from the smartphone is currently used by just under 20 thousand different models of devices and supports something like 30 thousand mobile apps. The idea of Samsung, in essence, is to bring together in a single platform processing capabilities and communication, in order to accelerate the go-to-market of new products.
In this first phase, Artik looks in three different versions (1, 5 and 10). The first, the size of a ladybird (12 x 12 mm) and costs in the order of 10 dollars, boasts of a motion sensor to 9 axes and will find application on board of smartwatch. The second work with a dual core 1GHz processor and the intended use is in the field of home automation, the wearable devices and drones. Artik 10, the largest of the three tabs, the size of two postage stamps side by side and promises the functionality of a mobile device of medium-high: chip eight brains, Bluetooth, ZigBee and WiFi, 16 GB of internal memory and encoding / decoding 1080p video. It will cost less than $ 100 and will work in the body of the smart home management systems and household appliances.
A final note of color that concerns us closely: Artik components are already certified for Arduino, and in particular the so-called Software Development Environment (IDE) of the company of Ivrea. To confirm it, enhancing the opportunities that open up to the community of programmers “to create something revolutionary in the field of the Internet of Things”, was directly from the USA, Massimo Banzi.
