Massimo Banzi choose the Maker Faire underway in San Mateo, California, to announce a new partnership with the American Adafruit, Arduino boards that now produce from its factory in New York. The news is particularly relevant in light of the history of Arduino in recent months.
As explained in the article published on Nòva February 22, there are two ongoing legal disputes between Italy and the United States for the protection of brand. It is a long and complex history which sees the one hand the four co-founders, led by Banzi, and other Gianluca Martino, which in turn is the fifth co-founder and the first day of Arduino holder of the production with his company of Smart Projects Ivrea. The situation has plunged in November, when the control of Smart Projects is passed to Federico Musto who changed the company name in Arduino srl. He has spawned a sister site but competitor Arduino.cc, called Arduino.org.
This Arduino.cc lost the greatest part of the production of cards. The US deal, therefore, is this: after months in which the forum has grown the surprise of anyone who bought Arduino boards and was marked Arduino.org, Banzi and his companions can now return to the market with their cards. For this Banzi speaks of “Independence Day.”
It starts from America for at least two reasons. First, because it is in California that Arduino has become a phenomenon contributing to the birth of Makers already a decade ago. It is still the most important market, while in Italy the popularity of the card and Massimo Banzi came later.
Then, there is the theme of the brand. The American Arduino llc, which sees a 20% share of all co-founders, including Martino (although its share is now Musto), Arduino has registered the trademark in the United States. What today is called Arduino srl, however, it has recorded in Italy and by extension in other countries. For this Banzi announced the birth of the new brand Genuine, name by which the card will be sold in Italy and other countries.
Since when? Arduino American (starting with the classic models, then it will reach new already announced in San Mateo) will be on sale from July, while still do not know what will be the level in the rest of the world. It seems that they are in negotiations to make produce Genuine also from an Italian partner. Banzi has always said it would keep a portion of production in Italy, but expanding the manufacturing to other countries. Proposal that had not found agree Martino, probably concerned about the fate of the factory Ivrea. Factory that, at present, is the only Italian to produce cards. Who call Arduino.org not Genuine.
In recent weeks Arduino.cc went ahead with the strategy of the big partnership announced – after the one with Intel – a deal with Microsoft, which provides for the integration of card with Windows 10, and one with Samsung that require certification of the new platform Arduino internet of things called Artik.
