– Convert the citrus processing waste into clean energy. And ‘this is the goal of the special pilot plant built by District Sicilian citrus fruits and the University of Catania. The system transforms the gas produced by the so called “pulp”, currently managed as waste, to obtain biomass from which to extract electricity. The power developed is able to cover the average energy consumption of 333 homes.

Green energy – What inaugurated in Catania is small plant that can enhance the ” pulp “citrus, other by-products of food chains Mediterranean (pomace, grape pomace, blades of prickly pears) and crops in rotation or second crops. All with considerable advantages for the environment, since it avoids the accumulation of waste and industrial waste and produces clean energy. The system can provide, in addition, about 500 cubic meters of biogas and activate a generator capable of producing 1 megawatt of electricity, sufficient to power an average consumption of 333 homes.

From waste a resource – The industrial production of citrus juice produces a residual moisture, the “pulp”, which represents about 60% of the quantity Treaty. It is currently run like a rejection, generates high costs and only partially is used as fertilizer in agriculture or as animal feed. A transform it into a resource is the plant of Catania, which uses the amount of anaerobic digestion for the production of electrical energy, biogas, bio-based and nutrients to the soil. To get an idea of the economic advantage, you know that dispose over 340 thousand tons of pulp produced on average each year, costing over 10 million euro (30 euro / ton).

It takes “only” 20 other systems – The goal is to extend the project to the entire region: it was, in fact, calculated that to solve the “problem” of residues citrus in Sicily would be enough 20 “digesters” made on the plant model pilot. According Federica Silvery, President District Sicilian citrus fruits, the project provides three positive implications. The first is to “have turned the spotlight on a real problem related to the reuse of a product, the pulp, which has critical factor has the potential to become a resource.” Another important feature is the promotion of “dialogue between public and private companies in the supply chain.” Finally, “this project has given value to the innovation of the system given by the District of Citrus and passionately supported by The Coca-Cola Foundation: a real positive energy required to change course of the entire sector.”
