Storm of algae in the Baltic Sea photographed from space – VEB

Bringing green, with lots of “eye”, very similar to a hurricane, this is the first impression one gets seeing photo of a storm of algae. The image has been photographed from space, through one of the satellites of the planet Sentinel, the Sentinel-2A of the European Space Agency (ESA) launched on 23 June. The storm of algae, much more violent than expected, occurred in the Baltic Sea.

The exceptional heat caused the strange phenomenon. The cyanobacteria, better known as “blue algae” have long been a threat to the environment, with pollution and poor oxygenation of deeper water.

The storm of algae color the vortex of different shades of green, yellow and blue. High up on the photo, it stands a ship, it portrayed as a small white sign. The turbulence created by its engine draws a black line running through the colorful whirl.
