Eclipse and superluna: mysteries and beliefs around the ‘Blood Moon’ – NextMe

Lunarossa28settembre2015

Eclipse all and superluna , two events in one. A double feature that is focusing on whether the world’s attention, but around which hovers an aura of mystery. The moon indeed very often is associated with myths, superstitions, legends and omens.

The only thing certain is that the show will be waiting for the night between 27 and 28 September at 4.47 am, when the Earth’s shadow completely darkened the moon until it becomes “red”. But at that time, our satellite will be located in a particular location. Will be at the perigee , the minimum distance between the Earth and the Moon (356,876 kilometers).

But here are the false myths surrounding the eclipse and the moon.

1) The eclipse of superluna announces the end of the world

I could not certainly miss a scenario Armageddon style. The eclipse of superluna of 28 September will be the ultimadell’attuale tetrad , a series of four lunar eclipses that occurred over the last 18 months. For some, the tetrad would even the sign of the end of the world. This dubious claim is certainly linked to the definition of “blood moons”. The tetrads are rare but continue to occur in the future, for other seven times in the current century.

“Throughout human history, people have always thought that the events of the sky that did not understand or were signs of the apocalypse or fortune, or that the gods were angry or happy” states on Space. “ The lunar tetrads are simply the result of orbital dynamics and geometry. There is no need to invoke the supernatural or the end of the world. “

2) The moon looks bigger during his rise

The reason why the moon looks bigger near the horizon is due to an effect optical illusion known as the Ponzo, an optical illusion that makes objects seem larger than they are in reality because of a misperception of the brain.

The time in which the moon looks bigger when it approaches Earth. The Moon’s orbit is slightly elliptical, so its distance from Earth varies from about 357,000 to 406,000 kilometers. During the lunar eclipse this weekend, the moon will be at perigee, the closest point to Earth. At that time, it will seem about 14 percent larger and up to 30 percent brighter than the moon apogee.

3) The moon has a dark side and has no gravity

The side of the moon perpetually hides during its orbit the Earth is not at all obscure but is only invisible to us, from our point of view. During the new moon, when the surface pointed at Earth is almost invisible, dark hemisphere is facing the sun.

The lack of gravity is a falsehood. The moon is much less massive than Earth that has an attractive force reduced.

4) Full moon and pregnant women

The full moon (let alone when it is super!) According to some beliefs promotes childbirth in women already at the end pregnancy. But no scientific confirmation .

5) Full moon and madness

As well as lacking a solid foundation that can prove that the full moon favors cases of “insanity”. No increased incidence of admission to psychiatric facilities worldwide.

On September 28, we just enjoy the show.
