Here is the argument: if we burned all the fossil fuels existing , sea levels would rise by 60 meters and there would be no escape for many cities including New York, Shanghai, London and Paris, Berlin. And if emissions of greenhouse gases will continue – as happened so far -a gallop, in ten years about 50 million people will become “climate refugees” fleeing from disasters caused by global warming and desertification.
Data and forecasts thrilling arriving in the year of the Paris Conference and of the climate agreement signed at the G7 Elmau. The prospect of a “climate collapse” due to the increase of temperature, the continuous consumption of fuels and produce emissions at current rates, it seems likely.
THE EFFECTS . Antarctic cap at risk . “If we burn all the fossil fuel reserves, this would eliminate the Antarctic ice sheet and cause a permanent increase of the sea level unprecedented in human history,” notes Ricarda Winkelmann, author of the study. Within the next 60-80 years the oceans could submerge an area that is now home to a billion people: cities like Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Calcutta, Hamburg and New York but also a large part of Italy. Another element relates to agriculture: the report released by The Economics of Land Degradation, says that in the next ten years will be inutilizabile 52% of the arable land. The causes are three: desertification, deforestation and pollution.
