Italian coasts Every 54 km polluted sea – Il Giornale di Vicenza

Every 54 km of Italian coast there is a point polluted by microbes from raw sewage. Almost all of these points (88%) are in correspondence of the mouth of rivers, waterways or drains along the coast. More than half are close to beaches frequented by bathers. These are the figures that emerge from the usual summer monitoring of Green Schooner.

The boat of Legambiente for two months has traveled throughout the Italian coast from Liguria to Friuli Venezia Giulia, including the islands . He has taken water samples in 265 points, one every 28 km of coastline, and subjected them to microbiological analysis, looking for intestinal enterococci and Escherichia coli. The sampling points were selected thanks to the work of Legambiente circles and reports of citizens. Of 265, 137 results are polluted, 52%.

In 2015 the traits were polluted every 62 km of coastline, the year before they were each 51.

“we have found no significant improvements or deteriorations, which for us is a negative figure – says the scientific director of Legambiente, Giorgio Zampetti -. On chronic problems, the points where for five years he finds a strong pollution, nothing has changed. “

This year stand out positively Sardinia and Puglia, with few critical issues. Top Adriatico the best situation is recorded in Veneto . The most critical situations are located in the Marche, Abruzzo and Calabria. In 86% of visited points we were also found trash on the beach. In 18% of cases were missed by waste water treatment, such as cotton buds, blister packs of medicines, toilet fresheners. The region with the most points is the polluted Campania (20), followed by Calabria (18), Sicily (17), Lazio (16) and Liguria (16). A point of 5 suffers from ‘chronic pollution: from 2010 to the present was found outside the legal limits for at least 5 times.

The regions made worse, with at least 5 points championships which are now polluted by years, are Marche, Liguria, Lazio, Campania and Calabria. But for brands, the Regional Councillor for Tourism, Moreno Pieroni replies: “utmost respect for Legambiente, but the Green Schooner data do not match those dell’Arpam, which monitors daily the state of our sea.”

Sicily instead holds the record of infringement proceedings for breaches of the EU in the purification, 175. They are then Calabria (130), Campania (115) and Lombardy (114). Sicily also the primacy of fines imposed by the EU: with 185 million euro, followed by 74 of the Lombardy (for rivers and lakes), 66 of Friuli V.G., 38 in Calabria and 21 of Campania.

“Despite the passage of 11 years by the deadlines set by the European Directive on sewage, Italy is still very strong late – says Zampetti -. About 25% of the population is not covered by an adequate treatment service and a third of urban areas at national level is affected by measures of the European Commission. Discharges non-purified are the worst enemies of tourism. ” “The 74% of non-swimming beaches has no signs to indicate on the ban – said Serena Carpenters, head of Legambiente campaigns -. The Water Portal of the Ministry of Health, which should give information on bathing, is full of inaccuracies and only works with the Chrome browser, not with Explorer or Mozilla. Missing a hotline to which people can report suspected pollution, so much so that people come to us from Legambiente for information. “
