Apple focuses on health and acquires Gliimpse
Founded by a former employee of Cupertino, the American startup has created an app to easily manage and share health data, which fits perfectly with the functionality of the Apple Watch
Apple focuses on the health and wellness industry. It does this by purchasing Gliimpse, a company specializing in the management and sharing of personal medical data. The agreement was chalked up silently at the beginning of the year, but was only confirmed yesterday by the group of Cupertino (California) after rumors of Fast Company: “Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and generally do not discuss the purpose or plans. ” Gliimpse was founded in 2013 by Anil Sethi, who early in his career in the ’80s he worked as an engineer for Apple. Sethi explains on his LinkedIn page that the idea was born after attending his sister in the fight against breast cancer, aware of how difficult it is to obtain and manage all personal medical data.
Gliimpse has created an app to easily manage and share health data, which fits well with Apple’s Watch feature. Free for consumers, generates money from health care providers and software developers that pay for programs and data sharing services. The acquisition allows Apple to strengthen its position in the field of digital health. It is several years that the group has focused on this front with services like HealthKit, CareKit and ResearchKit that allow patients, doctors and researchers to access important data through mobile devices. For the moment it is unclear how the iPhone maker will integrate the Gliimpse tools in its platform. Others see in the acquisition of a clue about upcoming Apple Watch models.
