Revolution in the construction of roads in the Netherlands. Motorists of Rotterdam, in fact, will soon follow roads built with recycled plastics, alternative decidedly “green” and more durable than traditional asphalt. The project, called “PlasticRoad” uses prefabricated modules made entirely from recycled plastic instead the asphalt surface currently used. The idea is now being considered by the City Council and, if realized, would be the first project of its kind in the world.

According to the Dutch company that has proposed the VolkerWessels, roads made with recycled plastic could cut pollution linked to the asphalt, responsible for every year of the emission of millions of tons of CO2 globally. Moreover, according to its creators, PlasticRoad is also more reliable: it can withstand extreme temperatures, from -40 ° to + 80 °, and requires less maintenance.

With increased resistance to abrasion and weathering, the streets made with recycled plastic, ensures VolkerWessels, could last up to three times more than the asphalt used today. Furthermore, due to its hollow structure, PlasticRoad facilitates the installation of cables and tubes, which can be positioned on the inside, without having to resort to laborious and annoying excavations.

Finally, the laying of the streets of plastic would be easier and faster than that of the asphalt: the prefabricated blocks can be positioned on the roads within a few weeks (compared to the months needed today), thus reducing the inconvenience of motorists for traffic and deviations related to work in progress.
