Beware of Christmas trees may interfere with your wi-fi – The Republic

MORE Lucine, more festive. During Christmas almost every home is introduced a string of colored lights and a tree decorated bright. All of which might endanger the wi-fi home. Underlining how the decorations intermittently from interfering with your home network is the guarantor of communications English (Ofcom) who took advantage of this pre-Christmas period to remember that the performance of Internet connections may suffer a sharp decline due to a series of external agents. Not only the lights but also lamps, baby monitors, refrigerators, cordless telephones, speaker systems and garage door openers.

It is estimated that at least one home out of five can be plagued with difficulties of this kind. Ofcom talking about six million apartments that could enjoy better performance simply by acting on the parameters of the router. Sometimes it’s enough just to change channels wi-fi to avoid interference from the services of the neighbors. You do not need to be an expert because you just call the customer service of your service provider to guide you step-by-step. Now all customer interfaces have sections devoted to the settings of the wireless router.

The recommendation is to move your router wi-fi as far as possible from these devices or in any case at least three meters. Yeah, but is there any way to know if you are susceptible to the problem? Ofcom recommends using its new Wi-Fi checker app for Android and iOS.

“If there is a significant decrease in performance between your connection and your home Wi-Fi network, the app will identify and provide advice to help you solve the problem that you have, “reads the description. In truth the mixed reviews on the Play Store suggest that is not working very well and that perhaps detect macro-issues. However Italian Apple Store is not yet available.
