This packaging of beer is edible, to protect animals – LifeGate

This packaging of beer is edible for animals

a completely edible packaging for beer cans was invented by Saltwater Brewery , the US producer of craft beer company, in partnership with the advertising agency We Believers.

The problem of plastic in the ocean

The idea was born from the need to protect the ocean and the animals from the large amount of plastic that the man inexplicably throws on the beaches and in the sea over the world representing a deadly danger to the animals that mistake it for food. “Statistics show that worldwide about one million and 100 thousand marine mammals and sea turtles get trapped in plastic or ingest and die,” says Mark Tukulka, marine biologist.

Innovative technology and biodegradable

The innovative packaging has been realized through the use of by-products derived from the production process of beer such as barley and wheat. Totally biodegradable and digestible, this product becomes a “snack” safe for the animals but, if it is not swallowed, it decomposes quickly.

The first batch of edible rings has been produced and tested in April. “This innovative technology is efficient and durable than traditional plastic packaging,” says the company in the promotional video.

Given the novelty and the use of the product not yet widespread, the cost of production is higher than the usual plastic rings. “If the majority of brewers adopt this technology, the cost of production would become competitive,” says the company. “We want to influence the producer and convince them to join in this endeavor,” adds Chris Gove, President of Saltwater Brewery.

If so, the impact of this product would become really significant helping to save hundreds of thousands of marine animals in the world. However, bearing in mind that this type of waste represents only a small percentage of what we throw in the sea and on the beaches, perhaps we should also rethink our habits to avoid putting at risk the lives of other species on Earth.
