We do not understand the emoji in the same way: but is it really a bad thing? – Intelligonews

The dream of a universal language and a ubiquitous communication fascinates more and more our society. First they tried with esperanto obviously failed. Then he thought about the worldwide spread of English to make us understand all (more or less). It was thought, however, to be able to do even better with a non-verbal communication. For example that of the emoji, smilies and other symbols that we use every day in support of our online communications and that you thought could even evolve into a self-sufficient language and immediately understood by all. But no.

A study of the GroupLens Research University of Minnesota, prepared for the next edition dell’Icwsm, a major conference on social media, explained that we do not understand the emoji everyone equally. And because we tend to interpret the smiley faces so different, and it’s because different brands of phones and different operating systems tend to make the symbols so significantly different from each other. It has been shown, then, that the smiley face that tears from laughing or crying that cats and dogs, the little monkey who covers his eyes, the little man sleepy give rise to different interpretations by user and user.

A survey on the interpretation of 22 characters between the Unicode most popular has revealed that only 4.5% of the examined symbols showed a low level of disagreement. On the contrary, in 25% of cases the participants did not agree on the meaning or the emotional surrender dell’emoji analyzed. Now the Unicode consortium requests for production companies to work technically in order to “break down the contradictions of the communication.” And if the contradiction would be eliminated from the human communication, with or without emoji?
