Forty-four hours for the 3D printing of the various components, six days in all counting assembly and finishing. The Strati, a small two-seater that looks a bit ‘a cross between a Beetle and a Batmobile is not, although the manufacturers claim to the contrary, strictly speaking the very first car born from a 3D printer – the primacy belongs probably to the Urbee by designer Jim Kor – but it is certainly one built faster and whose genesis seems to anticipate a real breakthrough for the automotive industry.

From mass production in huge factories, to the one distributed in small local plants capable of churning out a few thousand copies. So when, a few days ago, the small car, especially ideal for short journeys (still lacks approval for motorways) fell from the stage of the International Manufacturing Show in Chicago, going to the streets, it was a his way to a historic moment.

Also because it is a concept, an exercise in school, no commercial future: the first prototype has already been sold and additional copies will begin to appear on the market later this year. The Local Motors, the company that produces it, already has three micro-factories operative: in Knoxville, Las Vegas and Phoenix; and soon it will open two more, including one in Europe, to Berlin.

The cost of the layers, which is powered by an electric motor and can reach 65 km per hour with a range of almost 200 km has not yet been fixed, but being aa as told by the founder of Local Motors Jay Rogers, should be somewhere between 18,000 and $ 34,000.

The case of the layers goes to school for the manner in which you have chosen the design of the car, through a highly participatory process, in line with the practices of Web 2.0. Local Motors has announced a contest in June on their site , asking fans to submit project proposals.

He won a Italian designer , the source Mestre, but living for several years in Turin, Michele Anoè. Of the other 200 designs submitted and over – says Rogers – at least a fortnight could be printed without problems, which means to have, without great effort, fifteen potential models of new cars.

Local Motors is not merely to this: when it comes to printing in three dimensions, the real innovation, as pointed out several times by the founder, is not the subject product, but in the production process, which is becoming faster and faster, sophisticated and reliable. The future is the union of components “hard” as those who build the body of the vehicle, and “soft”, for the parts that need to have a certain degree of elasticity. Tomorrow the same technique applied to create layers may serve, once perfected and thanks to the use of polymers more flexible – says Rogers to build ships, planes, and even satellites.
