Google AlphaGo beats the world champion of Go – Tom’s Hardware

The Google AlphaGo supercomputer beat world champion Lee Sedol in the Chinese board game Go , in the first of five scheduled matches. In Seoul the computer and the man you are covered for about 3 and a half hours after which Lee, a living legend in Go, withdrew because AlphaGo had become a non-recoverable benefit.

Recall that AlphaGo, built by the London DeepMind owned by Google since 2014, in October 2015 had fought for five rounds to zero the three-time European champion Fan Hui. The AlphaGo creators explained that employs algorithms that allow them to learn and improve the gaming experience.

The interest in this first challenge was so high that the event was transmitted live television broadcasters in South Korea, China and Japan, as well as streamed live via the web. Now we just have to wait for the other four clashes.

This challenge between man and machine is an important test for evaluating the goals that scientists and engineers have achieved in the field of artificial intelligence over the past 10 years. The most famous victory against an AI man dates back to 1997, when the IBM supercomputer beat the then world chess champion Garry Kasparov.

However, experts argue that Go represents a completely different challenge because of the complexity of the game, the number of possible moves, and strategist requirements that you must have in order to prevail.

For this Demis Hassabis, CEO of AlphaGo, explained that “Go is our Everest”. When Lee accepted the challenge of AI was convinced that he would win, because he believed that the performance that had AlphaGo meeting demonstrated Fan were nowhere near enough to defeat him.

Before the game the teacher had shown some signs of tension, and after he admitted that at the beginning of the game he never imagined he might lose. “I did not think AlphaGo would play so perfectly match,” said the player.

Lee and AlphaGo meet again tomorrow, Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday. All matches will be broadcast live streaming YouTube , where you will also find the first match won by AlphaGo. We will keep you updated on the outcome of the challenge, which will be worth to remind the winner a prize of one million dollars.
